Time for a new transmission. I just got done putting one in because i had the same exact problem. Your options are to have your tranny rebuilt or buy a already rebuilt one. Start saving up.

yeah sounds like you need a new tranny. for the quick, simple, and temporary fix, you could try to hold the gear lever to prevent it from popping, or i have even heard of people strapping a bungee cord from the gear lever to the hand brake to keep it in place. a rebuilt tranny is going to cost you maybe $300 stock, maybe even cheaper. its the labor/work that is going to kill you.

Bad syncro, you could have just the syncro replaced, but prolly for another $50 you could have a whole new tranny.

Would I be better off to get a freeway flyer? When I drive the bug to work I am on the freeway for most of the trip. It really pushes the car to do the speed limit (70mph) but if I don't I will get run over. I have been able to drive the car as long as I hold the car in gear when I accelerate or go up a hill. If I keep the car at a constant speed (interstate) it stays in gear.

if you do a lot of highway driving, you might as well go with a freeway flyer. price-wise, they are not that much more expensive than a stock tranny. if you do get another tranny, i would suggest KCR Transmissions in riverside (?) ca.
