I replaced the balljoints on my 1971 Ghia a few years ago. The balljoints sat on the shelf for a couple of years before I managed to fit them. I think they are around 5 - 7 years old and now have 2000 - 3000 miles on them.

After I fitted them the steering was very stiff and would not centre. The car has been professionally aligned and I have since checked the alignment myself and it appears correct. The balljoints were manufactured by Meyle in Germany so appear to be of decent quality. The balljoints were pressed in by a professional machine shop, but I reassembled the front end myself. They are aligned with the marks on the arms.

Has anyone else seen this before please?

Oh yes...many, many times.

Here's just one recent one...: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=644603

If you need any more info just post in that topic...I'll lock this one to remove the need for duplication.
