i got this peice from a donor car. the metal is pitted but after a thorough cleaning with a wire wheel, it turned out ok. the metal is still strong (allthough pitted) and there is no rust anymore. some parts are a "burned" colour, but over all it seems to be in ok shape. would this peice be ok to use, or should i make or scrounge up another peice in better condition? i would hate to put it in only for it to cause problems in the future.
all help is appreciated.

it will work but you need to make sure you seal that once you weld it in otherwise it will rust out again. _________________ Before your criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them you're a mile away and you have their shoes!

It will work, like the man said. Use a product like POR-15 to protect it after its installed and you are good to go, IMHO. _________________ NTHANG, LLC |

That panel looks just fine to use but I would try to break open what looks to me like a few rust blisters first. 36 or 50 grit roloc discs will do that quickly. I would suggest you kill that rust, not encapsulate it with POR15. Picklex works well. Then you can epoxy prime the part and feel pretty confident that you've got it sealed up well.
Be sure you don't have pinhole rust coming through from the back. That's what usually causes those little blister things.

Looks like some of the rust pits will go through if you use a carbide tip bit and try to clean them.I'd get anothe panel. _________________ 2-67

I was talking to a "real VW restoration pro" (as opposed to the back yard type like myself) and he said on all his bug pans after he sandblasts them he pours "OSPHO" <sp?> on them, I have never tried this before, all I know is that it is a acid and you dont want to get it on your hands or body!!! _________________ Ambassador of Logistics Wide 5 Vintage Volkswagen Club International |
