From reading in forums like this and others, the three worst companys to buy motors and parts from in no particular order: Gex, Bernie Bergman, Mofoco. I unfortunately at one time had a gex motor myself _________________ Zombie

About 4yrs ago a friend of mine smuggled me into GEX. They had a whole industrial complex. I have know clue how many employees(100+). They had guys Tearing down cores, honing cyls, align boring, building heads etc. They were huge. I don't know what thier operation is like in Arkansas.

I have had both GEX and MOFOCO engines. Here's the scoop.
GEX was crap. Leaked oil from the start, amazing since it also had very little oil pressure. I guess the glob of silicone they put on the oil pump cover had something to do with both problems. Had loose head bolts. Had manifold leaks (was a turn key motor 1600). Crank seal started leaking. The thing did not make loads of HP. It lasted just beyond the warrentee.
2nd engine was a MOFOCO steetwise 1776 long block. I installed stock engine tin, Weber dual 34 ICTs, compumotor ignition, and a ceremic coated hide-away exhaust. This motor has run great for 35K miles with no problems. I drive it daily (including to work today) I have called MOFOCO several times in the last couple of years and answers to my questions have ranged from very helpful to down right rude. The questions were around timing, oil temp, and plug types, not about any problems I've had.
Was I lucky with the MOFOCO engine. Maybe. I would think long and hard about buying from them again (as I would with anyone) but I would consider them.

I think I get the picture. Good shops are hard to come by, especially out here in Kansas. GEX's prices seemed reasonable to me but it made me wonder.

AC.Net and John C. have a great reputation. But as with any transaction, speak to them and make sure you understand what you are paying for.
You should speak to Steve @ BAP. I've never delt with him, but all his posts say the "right thing" and he seems like a "straight shooter". He is also a regular here and values his reputation. He's somewhere between a custom built and a mass produced and will give you a good value. _________________ Glenn

Well guys, I finally had time to read a little about GEX. I really liked the line, "McDonald's hamburgers are put together with more love and care than a GEX engine." I'm basically a newbie. I had a 67 20 years ago or so. 1600 dp, Holley Bugspray carb, header, 009. I had fun running down Vegas and Pintos but it was really a POS. Now, my son and I are wanting to go after the Pearl Harbor crowd and unleash our own sneak attack. What better way to do it than with a sedan. None of the kids with the coffee can mufflers will know what hit them. Later bros... _________________ "It'd just be a whole lot cooler if ya did."

I bought a 2110 long block from GEX a couple years ago. New case and heads. Paid extra to have it balanced. When I took it apart, the piston weight variation was almost 10 grams. The rods were worse. The engine leaked from day one, and these are not all the problems. The rocker arm geometry was so far off the valves tips mushroomed enough after 1000 miles so that the valves could not be removed from the heads.
GEX stopped taking my calls. Thats when I realized it was not just me that was having problems. As a business owner, I thought I was doing them a favor to give them feedback on what I thought was a singular problem.
I wish I had discovered Samba and shop talk forups before GEX. Too late now, but I'm having fun building my own engine. Good luck! |

I placed an order on the 10 of May with GEX for a rebuild kit and some heads for an engine I was rebuilding. I was told everything was in stock and the order would go out the next day. My credit card was billed for the order on the 13 of May. After two weeks of waiting and no parts I called GEX and spoke with Larry about my order. He told me my parts were still sitting in the shop and he did not know why they had not been sent out and he would call me back when he found out why. After another couple of days and no call back from Larry I called him back and the parts were still there and he said again he would send them right out. Finally on the 28 of May my parts arrived. The lifters and gasket rebuild kit were missing from the order and the oil screen looked like someone stepped on it and the crank bearings were the wrong size. The heads that were sent to me were not the same. One the rocker arms bolted on the other head had studs for the rocker arms. I called and spoke with Larry once again and he said he would check into it and call me back. Again I did not recieve a call back so I had to call him back. He said for me to send the bearings back and he would pay for the shipping and send the missing parts and the correct bearings. He said the heads would be ok to use. I told him i needed the parts next dayed since it is now the 7 of June and it has been a month since I placed the order and needed to have the engine back in the car by the 13 of June. On the 11 of June The parts arrived and guess what they screwed the bearing sizes up again even after they were printed on the bottom of the receipt. So of course I call back and got hung up on several times by his secretary and finally get a hold of him by getting my wife to ask for him. I told him I need the parts TODAY so the car would be running by the 13th. He said He would reimburse me for the bearings if that is what I had to do. I get the engine together and put the rocker arms on the heads and what do you know the head with the studs have larger studs for a 1600cc engine so my 40hp rocker arms wont fit. I had to pull the head back off the motor and put inserts in it for the proper style bolt. I have yet to see any of the money that I had to spend on parts that GEX screwed up on. I hope GEX does not just throw there motors together with whatever they happen to grab off the self. For anyone planning to make a purchase from GEX look at another supplier. They can not and do not stand up to there products. I have posted this on other sites if anyone reads this and can post it other places please do so. I want everyone to know how GEX takes care of their customers after they are paid. As for Larry he tells me he is the top guy in the company at GEX but I find that hard to believe for someone who cant even give me a set of bearings by the measurements I give him. If any one knows another way to contact GEX to get a little better customer service please let me know.
Thanks, Rodney _________________ rodney |

You think thats bad.
I bought a street wise engine from MOFOCO. And I had a lifter crack between the flat part and the shaft of the lifter. After that broke it ruined my cam.
The shop that fixed my engine said they never seen a lifter crack like that before. I guess theres a first for everything, it just sucks that it happend to be me. |

by no means am I sticking up for GEX, but you get what you pay for. their engines are so cheap that if it runs it is worth the price you paid, just in parts.
I fear that the motor in my notch is a gex. The heads are stamped GEX, but it could just be the heads. it runs great, has lots of power, gets good gas milage, and dosent use or leak too much oil. could be luck, put 100 monkeys in a room they are destined to build one good engine in their lifetime _________________ Stop dead photo links! The parts they use cost more at retail than the entire engine does! Yep, don't complain! _________________ Jake Raby
