Anyone have experience running the centrifugal / implement type air cleaners?

Yep. I ran a UMP cannister for a while which is just a sexy aluminum replica of a production filter like a Donaldson or similar. It takes air filter maintenance from a monthly or every-ride nuisance, to forgetting you even have an air filter. I just silted my good engine thinking I could get by without one, and now I'm going back to a UMP centrifugal filter. It's the only real answer I've found that makes the big problems disappear.

The class 12 Baja 1000 car I have supported runs one, as do about 80% of the competitive cars in the desert. I go to Mexico 4-5 times a year on business, and all the homemade off road contraptions have some drum filter taken off some heavy equipment at the scrapper. Lots of VW stuff down there too, even in north central MX! (Not Baja)
