So I am cleaning up and replacing the gaskets on my 1600 DP engine and I found this cylinder valve all crusty like this. The other 3 are just dirty and oily. What could have caused this type of grime. Do I have to dig deeper into the engine. Car has not run for years and I bought it not running. Any advice would be appreciated!

Water caused that. I’d clean it up then remove the valves and clean the exhaust ports looking for cracks. Valves out look at the seats are they rusted? Cracks between seats are ok.

I agree. First clean the head in solvent. I use a 5-gal utility bucket from Home Depot/Lowe's and put in 2 gallons of diesel fuel or kerosene as the solvent. Let the head sit in the solvent overnight to help soften the grease. After you work the grease off with a stiff parts cleaning brush, use some brass bristle brushes for a drill to work the "calcified" crap off the combustion chamber. A set of these or similar- https://www.amazon.com/Hiqalty-Crimped-4-Inch-Clea...8336141e14

At that point you can inspect the seats and surrounding areas per Zund's response. If there are no cracks, you'll likely need to have all valve seats reground to work through any pitting from the water corrosion on steel. Then replace the exhaust valves. Chase the spark plug holes with a suitable thread tool.

The cylinder doesn’t seem to be as crusty as the head. I a, wondering since I am cleaning up the heads if I should also replace the cylinder rings. Not sure if that is part of the problem also.
