Have an idea/question :

Is there any reason to not replace the studs on the case, where the alternator stand mounts to, with bolts ?

With studs, you cant move the stand enough to remove it, with the engine installed.

I am thinking, that if you use bolts instead, you could easily remove the stand, with the alternator and fan, with the engine installed.

And without the alternator and stand installed, engine removal/installation would also be easier.

Comments ?

Some of done this, using either hex head screws or allen head screws, 8.0mm x 1.25mm thread.

Some folks will say that using bolts and multiple R&Rs will weaken the threads in the block, but I doubt that would happen in normal life.

Some folks have even slotted the two holes in the stand to make R&R even easier.

You are more likely to strip or pull the threads in the softer case by over tightening a bolt vs. using a stud and nut. As Cusser said, not much of a concern if the engine is together and it's done infrequently. If the case is apart and/or you plan to do it more often, I would go ahead and install 'case savers'.

Steel inserts so you can use bolts.

Looking at your diagram I think you could slot the rear left enough to allow the fan removal and thru bolt the rear right. Three original studs and a thru bolt. Maybe?

Ok, I will do this mod at the next occasion.

Yes stripping the threads is a concern, but only if you go overboard when tightening the bolts.
Just have to have a little "feel" in the wrist.... Very Happy Very Happy

8mm studs threaded into the case or their nuts typically are maximum 14 ft lbs. One could likely do fine with less there.

Solid threaded inserts are not a bad idea if one wants to make bulletproof.

Me too, as much as possible, but the location of the studs or bolts for the alternator stand makes is pretty much impossible.
