Does the existing starter look like the one on the top left? That is an autostick starter.

And your new starter looks like the one in the bottom right? That would be a typical starter for a 1967-on VW with manual transmission.

However, an autostick starter can be simply bolted in to replace the typical starter, it offers a little more power and does NOT require a bushing in the transmission, as it's self-supported. So if that's the case, someone either wanted more power or didn't want to replace the transmission bushing.

So if your existing one looks like an autostick starter, I'd return the new one and get an autostick starter for yours, then you wouldn't need to worry if your transmission bushing was OK.

Yes, called a starter for an automatic transmission.

I recommended to purchase starter for automatic transmission so if the transmission bushing is missing, worn, or even the transmission housing for such is bad, you wouldn't have to deal with that.

Just curious ... how did you conclude that the old starter was bad?

Assuming that it does need to be replaced ...

(You may want to have a seat before checking these links.)

https://www.jbugs.com/product/SR17X.html

https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=003911023B

You could check your local NAPA. Specify that it needs to be the SR17X starter.

I wasn't even going to travel that road with margard8. But in my 5 decades experience I find way more "failure to crank" issues with battery and dirty/loose/bad connections than with the starters. Here we TEST, we just don't throw parts in and hope.

I've had my 1970 since 1972, and my 1971 since 1976, and both have run on their second starter for over 3 decades. I used genuine "rebuilt by Bosch" starters, not sure such are available these days. And yes, my starters each use the bushing, replaced for first time in my 1970 in 2016-2017 and my 1971 is on its factory starter bushing. Note that if either starter ever goes out, I may upgrade to the self-supported autostick starter.

My first way to check for a bad battery is to try a jump start from another vehicle; if it starts, suspect the battery !!!! Second way is to measure voltage across battery terminals while 5 seconds in trying to crank the engine.

I see four brands for automatics listed in stock at RockAuto from $45 to $70.

Autostick starters are well known for having wonky solenoids while the starter motor itself is just fine... the autostick starter motor is pretty robust.

I went through a couple such bad solenoids during the many years I drove my Baja Bug with an Autostick starter (that is still) on it.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.
