No. Yes. Maybe. I dunno.
Kind of hard to answer this unless you specify what gauge you are wanting to use.
Here's an old story:
13 years ago now, I tried some VDO fuel gauges with the late style VW electric tank sending unit in my Baja bug. Turns out the vintage version had a faceplate that worked. The modern one had the same needle movement but VDO had gone and changed the faceplate to different graphics that no longer matched.
