It's from a 1999 issue Phaeton that I had in my sons box.
I trimmed the front lip down cut off the body mount tab gave it a little smooth out from a fingernail file and then painted it flat black. Looks great.
Took the chrome torquthurst wheels from it too.
The Manx I made for myself and for 90volts has real meadowbrook Manx flake on it, I ground it up some and clear coated it on.
Drilled out the rivots and painted the interior.

It's not a toy but it is a buggy collectable. I recently found this Jim Beam bottle on EBay and had to have it. The cap is a metal Manx style buggy that wetghs about 1 1/2 lbs.

I just bought a toy exactly like the one in the back row, in the middle. Orange manx, white top, "D" cell battery power. Do you have any information on it? |

Hi Florida Buggy
That very realistic orange Manx buggy model you mentioned, was made by the tin plate toy company Taiyo from Japan, and is certainly my favourite toy, and was also the inspiration for the colour of my REAL buggy :D :
I am not too sure about the model's history, but is clearly a Manx (it even has the logo on its nose), and has a plastic body and tin plate interior.
I think it dates back to the early 70s. As you said, it operates with two 'D' cell batteries, and it has a 'bump and go' function. It will even ride on a table without falling off when it reaches the end! (try it, it really works). View from the under side:
It has flashing red light at the rear (engine on fire? :? )
I've also found this pic on line, it seems like exactly the same car, but with 'remote control' and a different box:

I am puzzled and intrigued by this latest addition to my model buggy collection, one that I got yesterday. The approximately 10inch long battery operated 'bump and go' buggy model has a plastic body, and a plastic chassis. It has a moulding of an upright VW engine with two portruding exhausts at the back, and a metal windshield frame. It has large wheels at the rear, and smaller wheels up front, and a 'wide 5' bolt pattern on the 5-spoke rims. But wait for this - the writing on the chassis indicating the clip opening the battery holder, next to the switch, the scripts on the tyres and the decals on the rear wheel arches are all in RUSSIAN. (Well, I presume Russian, as it is letters that I don't recognise, and they are certainly NOT Eastern.) It also has a weird logo on the bottom, that looks like an 'S' within a circle, or almost like a 'yin and yan' sign.
There are certain similarities to my orange 'bump and go' Manx buggy mentioned in a previous post, and also pictured below:
- both have the same wheel base, and more or less the same dimensions (or scale if you want, I - reckon about 1:14).
- they basically have the same 'bump and go' mechanism with a 5th rotating wheel in the centre of the chassis, connected to the electric motor.
- both have a flashing light at the rear, illuminating the red transparent finned 'cylinder heads' and 'pulley' of
the engine.
- both have low back seats, and a LHD steering wheel
but they also have the following obvious differences:
- the orange buggy uses 2 x 'D'-cell batteries and the white buggy 3 x 'C'-cell batteries
- the body of the orange buggy is fastened by philips screws, and the white buggy by flat screws
- the orange buggy has a tin plate interior, and the white buggy a plastic interior
- the decals of the orange buggy are paper based, and those of the white buggy are foil based
The only damage on the white buggy is that it is missing the two headlights. I put the headlights of another model on, for the purpose of the pics.
Does anyone have any more information on this buggy? Maybe a relic from the USSR?
Greetings from South Africa!

Nice Buggys.
I have all the HWs Manx's but that yellow one with black interior. What is that one from?
Also, you gotta start watching the new classics line-up form HWs. The Manx is listed. We should see it in some interesting colors. |

OK - not 'quite' a buggy model - but I want to share it with you anyway  The stuff coming out of China these days is absolutely amazing. This is my latest find - a radio control Kubelwagen! It is a large model, I'd say with a scale of about 1:12, and easily longer than a Volksworld magazine. Quite detailed, but with modern off road wheels that would challenge a Hummvee anytime. Not too sure about the historical WW2 correctness of the six rocket launchers at the back either, but the wording on the box is hillarious!
When the car going forward, the light can flashing, and the launcher can moving left and right :
(It's never too late to have a happy childhood )

Following a hint from a friend at a car show yesterday, an anxious search for an antique shop I've never been before this morning, and some serious wheeling and dealing with the antique shop owner, I am tonight the proud owner of a vintage battery operated Buggy with Donald Duck as the driver! Does anyone perhaps have some more detail of this toy?

I think I have the same one in the box.
Only difference was the drivers seem different on some.
I have seen Donald, a cowboy, and mine has a racer outfit.
I'll get some pics tonight.
