Rick C looks like the paint has been removed from the ID tag on your distributor... could just be the anlge and lighting... |

You know, it does look like that. The 383's, BR 8's, and BR 25's had 2 different types of tags. 1) the glossy black and aluminum and 2) a "galvanized" looking flat finish that was dull. This BR 8 has the dull finish. |

Rick, your tins look to be semi gloss. '53 was gloss. I don't know about '54 but I think they were a gloss as well. :? |

Are you sure about the two different tag finishes? I was thinking that when the distributors get rebuilt if they're soaked in solvent that the paint on the tag is removed. |

I think the carburetor tag goes on the front right screw also. :)
Should a '54 have the tilted regulator? |

Boy Bob, you've pointed that out 3 times on this thread to 3 different people (Rick, Greg & myself). That must be the first detail you look for  |

Is your car a '54? Only asking because the decklid spring perch is 1956-57 style. |

:D You're lucky your not a Porsche.........It's the first thing I look at when I judge cars. Talk about obvious......how could you not notice. BTW the decal on the air cleaner is too low. It should split the upper section not the lower panel. You have to cut the decal so that it doesn't ride the ridge. The originals were smaller.......the repros have to be cut to be placed correctly. |

OK, For starters I'll paint the Big Nut one day Bob. I believe the .010 is an accepted Distributor but would not be a "Factory" Distributor. The car is a 54' and I understand the decklid looks to be a 56-57 but the paint was the original color and at the time never questioned it. The Pink says the car is a 55' but the Body Tag is stamped 54'. I would have to guess without knowing the build date that this 54' of mine is a later 54' and maybe the newer Decklids were being used but that's just a guess. I really do love the criticism and yes Everett the tilted Regulator is correct according to Rich Kimball's Ovals Only Hand Book. The Aircleaner Decal I personally made and reproduce. I recreated the Decal from a Digital Pic that I took off of one of Todd Tesslers Cars which I know was an original Water Mark Decal.

Greg......I don't doubt that the decal is good, but it is in the wrong place. All the original early strap over filters I have seen have the original decal higher on the cleaner. (on the second tier not the first) My '53 VW has an original sticker and is mounted on that level. It also may have been that the next year VW put them somewhere else, it's just that I have not seen them mounted that low before. :?
Your tilted regulator is the result of the backing plate being off center......regardless of what Rich said in his book; which BTW is full of mistakes. |

The engine looks beautiful. I do have a question though.
I noticed that the paint is burned off of the passenger side heat riser. This also happened to the engine in my '56.
Is it common for the heat riser on the passenger side to get significantly hotter than the one on the driver's side? Is this something I should worry about? |

Very common, and not a problem, except esthetically. |

Oops. You're right, Joe. The heat riser issue was covered in detail on page two. I was too busy looking at the pictures to read the fine print.
This is one of the most informative threads I have come accross in a long time.
BTW, has anyone noticed that the generator nut is not painted??? :) |

What month 54 is the car? Will determine if it should have either a BR2, BR3 or BR8 distributor. The 2's and 3's were used up to chassis #1-0702742 (engines also had dished pistons, and included different jetting specs on the 28PCI carb). You are clearly running a common BR8 since it has the vac advance. If the earlier 54 engines are rebuilt with flat pistons you can reuse the correct earlier 2 or 3 distributor however you have to use different timing specs.

According to Bob, it's supposed to be painted-
