Hello , pulling up this old thread again, I have a split gearbox that is supposed to be from a wrecked oval ??????
it only seems to have the casing part number
113 301 102 A but i can't find a serial number anywhere , is this normal for the older boxes

Is there anything stamped on the flat part above the starter?

If a customer had a damaged gearbox case, a new one from the parts dept would not have any numbers stamped into it.

Everyone,

I need your help identifying a swing axle. I bought a swing axle for my 63 Double Cab straight axle conversion.

As per the previous owner, the swing axle came out of 1968 type 3. It was still mounted on the suspension clip and it has 6 volt starter. The transaxle has the long axles and the wide 5 wheel pattern drums.

I need help trying to identify it and to determine the gear ratio. The part number on the starter side is 113 301 103. The serial number right below it is 538105.

I could use some help trying to ID this trans.... It is in my oval, but I believe it may be out of a '67.

I have a vw trike im trying to figure out what tranny I have the serial number on it is 8591626

Once the charts run out, I have posted (I thought it would have been in this thread but I it's too old for it) what one can pull out of VW's book Progressive Refinements.

Your number looks to be in the 1300 era. Probably geared like on the left here:

I was thinking that this transmission was from a '61, but maybe it's something else? No letters in the number sequence, just the 4123595. Help?

Just plain numbers were what they did back then, letters may be on the charts but not on the transaxles.

I was told this was a type 3 trans. Looking to use in a short axle conversion if it is. Any help would be appreciated.

A1 = TRANNY TYPE
5 = ALWAYS FOLLOWED BY 5
20 = DAY PRODUCED
05 = MONTH PRODUCED (MAY)
6 = 1956 BASED ON TRANNY TYPE CODE (NOT 1966 AS THIS WOULD NOT BE AN A1 TRANNY

Thats how I was taught to interpret the early ovals, hope this helps

I am a bit confused. If the 3rd digit is always a “5,” why is mine “6”?

What does this mean? (I’m thinking it means this transaxle was not original to my 1967 sedan.

It means the numbering convention mentioned by Stephen B doesn't apply to 1961 and newer transaxles at least. Your transaxle is most likely from a '68 based on the serial number.

My original been in the family since new Jan ‘68 has the transaxle number A046XXXX so your transmission is sometime after that.

Many of the lists of transaxles posted on here can be dubious,

This is wrong. Prior to Nov 72, the trans number was just a sequential serial number. Some letter codes were used starting in 69.

After Nov 72, the trans code is two letters followed by the date of manufacture, eg. AT dd mm y

Here's an example of the sequential serial number of 60s gearboxes. This first one is from mid 67. The serial number was at 9.9 million here.

Then, several months later, the serial number rolled over 10 million. But VW did not stamp the "1" at the beginning of the serial number, that's why this 68 trans has a zero at the beginning.

Bruce, been scanning this forum and you seem to have a good idea of YM on tyrannies.
Having difficulty fitting '68 brake cylinders to my 68 baja and suspect I don't have a 68 tranny or at least not 68 backing plates.
