Just got my DC back from paint and received new wiring harness and rubber from WW. I wll probably be trolling the forum soon for asisstance/info on wipers.

Pulled dead deep cycle marine battery and redid the aux battery charging circuit (isolator) before installing a optima yellow top. Reconnected the 12v power outlet in the engine compartment (off the aux battery).

I finally got my original paint but well hammered rear bumper installed on my 57. Then I made some brackets for my single wheel trailer. they aren't quite done, but I will get a few pics up when they are.

I also cleaned and re-installed some interior panels and the rear seat. Getting ready for Saturday's pre-show party at Long-roof's place, and the Spokane Bug Fair on Sunday. Hoping to sell a bunch of stuff at the swap so I don't have to haul a huge pile of stuff to the Vintage meet next month.

Today I added some WW seatbelts to my already over the top interior. Also, cut a base for my rear facing seat, big thanks to Jeremy57ride for posting the dimensions, fits like a glove!

Now I just need some foam for my bay cover and I'll be in business.

Put FatMat sound deadening in the BFKAThe Cragar Kombi. Well I'm about halfway done with the 100sq ft I bought.
I think it might be quieter. :?: It definately is cheesey looking.

I picked up a rear window seal for it at the Classic. It hasn't rained in a week though, so I have been putting off installing it. That seal definately has leakage issues.

Haven't been driving it much though. Been driving the DC.

Started my summer maintenance plan...

First up is to change the throwout bearing. I also plan to stop the gear oil leak out of the side covers of the transaxle and also pull the whole transaxle and do the rear shift bushing and all that.

Well, according to Bentley, step one is to "remove engine."

So I went to the garage after work and got going. It took me about 10 minutes to pull the bumper and rear apron and disconnect everything...and then about two hours to undo the two top engine mounting bolts. Dayum!

My wife normally holds the wrench on those guys from the engine-side while I undo them from underneath. But with her out of town for a few days, I had to make do without and it was a PAIN. Finally after experimenting with extensions, zip ties, wrenches, and vise grips (and bending my arm in about 6 places at the same time) I managed to undo those bolts and pull the engine. I also invented lots of new curses for the German engineers who made those bolts so in-f*cking-accesible.

If I'm having this much trouble with the throwout bearing, I can't wait to start with the side cover leak repair and pulling the RGB's :roll:

Test fit and installed the exhaust I got at OCTO for $1. Test run today to work, etc. If it stays, I'll have to pull it and get it cleaned up real good (too much "patina" all over it right now).

Here it is - I don't think I've ever seen this style before. Anyone?

The old -

Test fitting - clears the apron, tin, etc.

Cleaned the tip with some steel wool and Awesome. Bling! In the words of my daughter "That sure is shiny mama!"

Installed -

I'm thinking I like the look so far. Clearance is better for sure.

Cylinders 1 and 2 sure have a long way to go to get to the muffler.

One of my concerns - if this exhaust would have a negative effect for the motor (1914cc, dual 44's)? I've never seen the exhaust, so I know nothing about it.

The past couple of days the I have been back working on the 67 Westy Poptop.

I installed a temporary working Volvo AM/FM Sapphire radio for am upcoming trip. I found a correct Sapphire VI 12V AM/FM radio & am having it rebuilt. The Volvo one works good for now & will be fun for the almost 3000 mile trip.

I also recenttly found a much nicer 12V wiper motor, so I swapped it out. Installed new wiper blades. Where I am going there is always a chance of rain even this time of year.

I installed an original locking decklid handle & a VWOA trailer hitch as I am going to be pulling a very cool small 1971 German enclosed utility trailer that I have owned for almost 23 year but have not used it for about 15 years. I am really looking forward to it & the pics I will take of the pair in use. :)

I installed 1 of the 2 correct missing original Westy roof rack clamps. I have recently found out there are atleast 4 different types of original clamps.

I installed an original pair of seat belts in the rear. These are going to be needed as I am going to have my young nephews with me on some of the trip.

Last I installed new Wolfsburg West poptop hold downs. These things seam to be a really high quality. The length & color is correct. this is great because I had Baja Bug hold downs before I realized WW was reproducing them. The Baja ones are black & about 1/2" short. This makes you have to hook the T handle portion. This does not hold the top down tight & air gets underneath the top & blows around the canvas into the Bus.

I have a few more things I want to do before I leave on my trip. I will post them up when done.

installed vintage Grundig FM 12V radio (roughly period-correct)...had to drill WW speaker bracket, as the existing holes were only big enough for a toothpick...got the speaker here:

sounds pretty good for a single speaker...tried to use the ipod, but needs to be charged

looks pretty good installed...I'll probably change the knobs, but it's fine for now...listened to some jazz and beatles while cleaning up and enjoying a frosty Red Oval...the stars were visible from inside as I finished the beer 8-)

the speaker bracket is only visible because of the flash; the cork adding support to the radio will also be replaced...also installed silver-beige dash handle

Looks like you need some speaker cloth to hide the flash.
But I know the flash makes it look mucho worso than it really is.

I have put 434 miles on the bus now and decided that I did not like the 009 w/ pertronix. I replaced the points and condenser in a disty that came with the bus 3 years ago and installed that. Found my volume control screw was WAY out hopefully explaining my super duper poor gas mileage. I will be the first one to say I dont totally understand how to set the fuel mixture, I asked started a seperate thread asking for help on that.

swapped out the 6v choke for a new 12v element.

Also found circlip holding brake lever on missing and gas pedal lever kinda wonky, it is aftermarket and the knibs that keep it aligned to the bracket were crappy.. I added a washer and it is better.

took out brake lever pin, cleaned, greased and reinstalled with new circlip, much better.

Adjusted the emergency brake cables so they actually work, thats nice.
Then went and met a fellow sambanista and bought some Mango parts from him, nice meeting you Ryan!

You can still buy this exhaust new it is listed as "economy exhaust"

ordered some new half shafts, gaskets, door panels, reflective heat shield, got it registered and inspected (passed with flying colors) AND fixed up the fuel lines....pics to come muahahah
