Although not a classic movie, but it is set in the time period.
If anyone hasn't seen this movie yet, run, don't walk, to your nearest video store and get it! Most excelent movie!

Thats a true story isnt it?

If it is, that old man had some balls of steel. He packed shoe shine in the cracks of his old tires so he could pass tech inspection on the day he was to attempt to set the land speed record.....

Corvette Summer with Mark Hamel

And while it's not a racing movie, The French Connection has a great chase scene.

Don't forget about Repo Man and its eerie flying Nova.

I saw the car from that movie in the mid-america motorworks museum when I was picking up a bus from there a few years back. I think they were selling the low mileage '56 bus to make room for more corvettes or something.

Greased Lightning with Richard Pryor. Pryor plays Wendell Scott this is based on the real life story of Wendell Scott, a black man trying to make it big in NASCAR grand national racing.

And don't forget 6 pack with Kenny Rodgers. Kind of corney, but still some good car footage.

I bought that a few many years ago. I love that movie/documentary. I dig the classic footage of haulin' ass through small Mexican towns. 8)
