It is a real shame - I do still have a small sample somewhere if anyone needs it. Dave

Does your BC show L59?

It looks like a repaint as the seat area in the rear looks more inca than the rear door panel areas which do look bright red

you can see the color difference here

Oh yea, BC says L59.

That color on the rear seat area has been painted later i think.

Now that i have been working more with the car i have noted that there is a lot of colors on this car but the original L59 is everywhere under all these colors :)

You are very lucky as the only other SK verts that had color stated on the BC were the factory 'white' cars. Did your car have a destination location?

type4split Wed Mar 08, 2023 9:43 am

i feel like i'm gonna ask a dumb question, what does "SK" refer to?

this green one was mine at one time. from my research i think it was a tourist delivery car.

Its used in Type 2 world, Sikkens or Sonder (Special) and Kombination (Combination) but I use it to refer to any special order VW.

What did the BC come back as to color on your vert(s)?

type4split Thu Mar 09, 2023 3:34 pm

Thanks! Is that on the BC or something ? (I sold the green one to Belgium. I have not summited for BC red yet. seen a couple similar = poppy red. (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=152874&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I wouldnt get your hopes up on color or interior info on the BC. As mentioned earlier most SK verts come back as 'color not specified'. The only evidence so far has been the white verts that just state 'white' with no color code.

If Jonih posts a pic of his BC with the L59 code it will be the first ive seen for any red vert.

Your vert seems to be pretty original, no evidence of chalk mark indicating paint color on parcel tray?

Some time ago I posted up a picture of my horrible chrome window frames. I found that the CA chrome shops would not be interested, reached out to one recommended on this site but they didn't reply.

So I ventured into other options.

1. No door window or wing windows .... Okay, its a convertible and with the cost of the top material and installation, I was thinking that might not happen anyway.

2. Powder coat.... tried a few, don't do it....

3. Search for some to repair eventually.... Found the rears on the samba without glass. They were broken at the base but thats okay, then tired to buy some wing window portions from Europe .... total lack of communication.

First off, the rear ones seem to be easier to find, even if they are broken at the pivot point. Bought a set of frames only and had a friend braze them to my original bases (TIG brazing, pretty cool). Thanks to Lar's site I managed to get the glass and rubber in pretty okay.

4. Think outside the box.

Make my own ... tired to make the window frame from 1/2" mild steel square tubing. Cut out one side, made the slight bend, made the guides, but the length of the tubing was just a bit shorter than stock and the rubber was not going to sit well. So, that was off the table, but was fun to make.

So here is were it gets interesting and fun. I bought a full set of windows with the glass from a 59.....

The wing window section was identical except for the wing window rubber. Additionally, the window lock post rivets were loose but that was pretty easy to fix.

The doors are the same, the shape of the glass is the same, but other bits are not. The bottom metal frame is totally different with respect to the holes in the channels so you will need to use the oval ones.

This shows 2 things, one is the thickness of the powder coating, virtually impossible to remove, and secondly, more to the point is the guides are different as is the length of the piece that attaches to the bottom window frame.

So I cut those off and had my friend braze them in the proper position and cut off the extra. Perfect.

That's the "hack" if you must, but with the availability of these parts, seems pretty tame.

I had some issues with the regulators however. Several of the small round wheels were either frozen or flattened. Heat is your friend as well as a mig welder. Fixed. I do think this is more important than the guides in getting the windows up and down smoothly.

This bit here was bad, would not move with lots of heat and rust buster stuff.

So I ground off the head, used a punch to loosen it up nicely and welded it tight.

Final result, windows are in, roll up and down very nicely, with virtually no binding.

“Convertibles can be a bitch!”
I bet you’re quite the pro with removal and installation methods, right?
Glad to see you eventually solved your dilemma, now you can move on. BTW what color did you select for your Kab?

Yes, removal, install, removal, install, removal adjust and modify, install.

Iceland green was the winner of the family vote

I am working on the window rubber, specifically the little piece at the rear of the door.

This picture is from Lar's thread elsewhere,

can anyone shoot post up an image of how this looks when completed?

The piece does not go fully across and line up with the chrome strips.

thanks
