Wow, that's some real ingenuity there. I may have to steal your idea and do the same for my squareback. Floor pans are nearly gone.

My first car back in the mid/late 80's was a '72 Squareback I bought from my Mom for $1000. She couldn't operate a manual transmission, so she searched the globe for a decent automatic she could actually drive. It was pumpkin orange with black interior, fuel injected, and stock as they come.

After I bought it, I did a few things to it to personalize it a bit. Swapped the injectors for dual Webers, lowered the front end a bit, installed a God-awful "wink mirror" cuz that was the thing to do in So Cal at the time (sorry, man am I sorry :shock: ). It was a fun beach cruiser, slow and steady, and had plenty of surfboard storage capacity.

As most young adults do, I began to covet my friends' cars with power windows, air conditioning, and that whole reliability thing they had going for them. After selling it off for a "better car" I slowly began to miss it.

I had always hoped to scoop up another one, but it never felt like the right time, with family obligations and time constraints, yada yada. Until Sunday.

Found this '73 for sale, just 15 minutes away from my brother's house here in So Cal. Set up a meeting and fell in love all over again. The seller inherited it from the original owner, her aunt, who received it as an anniversary present, purchased in 1973 straight from the dealer. It was lovingly referred to as "The Pickle" by the family, a name which is growing on me currently, LOL. She kept most all of the receipts for all maintenance and repairs, which tell a very cool story of its history.

The body is extremely straight, with no signs of accident damage. The exterior paint was resprayed in 1999 (receipts found in the pile) and it's a pretty close match to the original paint in the interior. There is rust, lots of rust, including the floor pans, rear package tray, etc. But it's great shape otherwise, considering it's age and state of original purchase(Tennesee).

Since I haven't worked on a VW in 30+ years, stay tuned for lots of stupid questions and juvenile exuberance. :lol:

Wish I had known about these back in the 80ies. Not being able to camp in the SB with two persons was the main reason for me to switch to a bus once I returned to Germany. I don't regret switching to a bus but it would have been nice when I lived in California and did a ton of traveling around the west.

Fot my 1968 Squareback, I got the short axles put on to the transmission. Undercoated the rear wheel wells. And primered the ash tray and license light housing after bead blasting.

After sorting the electrical issues I noticed some oil leaks. Motor and tranny dropped to get them sorted.

That's awesome. The Original was coated in some type of rubber as to not scratch the rain gutter. BTW, I don't know if i posted that pic, but it may be my pic of the NOS strap in the bag.

If that NOS image of the strap & hook was yours then I thank you. I don't have any plasti-dip but might invest in some. My Sqb is original faded paint but nonetheless, I don't want to add any extra ware if I can help it.
