Sorry about the break down. Hope it's something simple. 5,700 miles @ 50mph

If I wasn't in Japan I'd fly over and watch you work on it with a beer in hand. :D

I dig this pic. Where's Richie?

Touch Nicks Thing Tue Jul 11, 2017 3:43 pm

ahahah, I'll be sure to drink some beers for you once I finish the trip. Richie just rolled into PA, good news!!!

Was the intake leak caused by backing the muffler into a stump?

I backed the montana westy into a tree once. The bumper protected the muffler.

Glad Richie made it!

That would make two of us watching Nick work drinking beer.
Damn Richard ! Nick has a seriously Gucci toolbox man!
I should of took of pic so all can revel and partake in admiring the greatness.

No idea if that caused the intake leak but my money is on a burnt exhaust valve due to the intake leak.

Its possible(probable), but, we'll know more once I drive the bus home and get the 36 torn down. To me, it just looked like the hole had been stripped over the years. It wasn't cracked. I was going about 5mph trying to get unstuck on the beach, wasn't a hard, hard hit. Bent the bumper some, but, the muffler got the brunt of it.

Ralfy trying to make me feel like something, dude got more tool organization then a freaking Sears! Seriously mega-shop status!

i go to check out Nicks bus when we stopped in Sunday to lend a hand and its a beauty. I was happy with my 67 until I got an up close look at this early bus with all the little details that makes early buses so great. We spent most of Sunday trying to get him on the road with no luck. A friend of ours seemed to think its a burnt valve. Its in my buddy's garage til Nick can make it back down to finish the trip. Cant wait to see the pics from the final leg of the trip.

It was a pretty small dent. Just to the left of the right bumper bracket.

epic journey Nick!

Did you fly out with the toolbox and camping gear? How did that work for you?

Touch Nicks Thing Wed Jul 12, 2017 7:37 am

I took my tools up with me, a sleeping bag and a suitcase of clothes. Had some spare parts, ordered more direct to Alaska, grab some more from Richard and bought more at Concept1. Didn't really camp, just slept in the bus on the middle or rear seat every night. Gypsy living.

OKIE DOKIE Wed Jul 12, 2017 1:52 pm

Man I slept a weekend on my middle seat God bless you!

What an epic trip.

Nick is only 3' tall, (l can say that because I am 3' tall) and the middle and rear seat are perfect for us vertically challenged people..

I guess sometimes being short has it advantageous.

Damn, the bus turned out stunning and looking sweet! Cool one!

Justin Tue Aug 29, 2017 8:23 am

Not sure if I'm happy for you or if I kind of hate you for the great find. :D

The bus looks fantastic! Congrats.

Couple random photos from the trip Richie just sent me.

The original 36 horse to the bus (case came in a cardboard box from Richard) was just received by Rimco and is in good shape to be rebuilt!! Good news there!

Original tranny is enroute to Rancho.

Should be cool to have all the original pieces rebuilt and back in the bus.

WTB- Standard crank, .020 case bearings

These pics are inspirational!

rpattee Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:31 am

Nice pics! Glad the case is usable. So cool having the original engine and transaxle.

Nice looking bus. That is in good shape for sitting that long. Earlier in this post it said its a standard not a kombi and then someone mentioned a wolfsburg bus. What is the difference. I never heard of a wolfsburg bus. Is a wolfsburg worth more or something. Just curious and would like to be able to tell the difference.
