Anyone have experience retrofitting hydraulic engine mounts to the stock diesel carrier bars & engine mounts? I have some text info on using Saab 9000t hydro units but no images or details on their install.

This is probably what you were looking for. This shows them on 82 carrier bars. The mounting method and location would be a little different on 83+ bars.

Mark, do you know what year Saab mounts he used and were they from a 900 or 9000? Thanks for posting the link to the pictures.

I don't know. He says they are for a "SAAB 2.0L 4 cylinder turbocharged engine".

If you are on the Vanagon and/or TDIconversion lists he is still around sometimes.

I like the ones used in the overland kits, they look easy to fab brackets, anyone know if they are a OEM unit?

The Saab units can be very spendy & with the state of Saab I can't imagine they will get cheaper. Adapting some Jetta Mk3 tdi mounts would be the same amount of work.
Something good & cheap from the big three woud be good to find.

Those are a standard Audi 5 cyl mount. I don't know the cost comparison but if the SAAB are too high I would go with the Audi ones. I have seen other people put them on their inline 4 engines. The 82 diesel Vanagon rubber mounts are no longer available new so various people have been motivated to engineer a replacement. It makes sense to use a readily available part like the Audi ones. (VW Quantums from around 85-88 came with 5 cyl Audi engine that used the same mounts)

Mark thank you. I am on the TDI conversion list, but when I was upgrading my mounts, I got no replies about any hydraulic mounts. My conversion is a little unique to the other TDI's that have been done. There was an email link on the page you posted so I sent an email. It has not bounced back yet. I am considering adding a 3rd mount in the timing cover area using the New Beetle r/s engine mount. I already have one, but need to fabricate and new bracket to connect to the engine. I think at 50 degrees, the ALH is too much weight on the L/S mount. Adding a 3rd mount I could support more weight on it and use the side mounts more to control twist than supporting the whole shooting match. Saab is going out of business, so maybe Saab mounts might not be the way to go. Thank you for posting.

I have seen the Audi ones used like in Eurospec's kit, but those mounts were not intended to be supported by their ears alone. The ears were more to attach them to the subframe that had a better attaching structure than just the ears. The Saab pictures were a nice fit to the stock carrier bars. Something you could do with minimal fabricating skills.

Those are Saab 900 mounts. They fit a wide range of other cars. that type of mount is used by a lot of people. Just go junk yarding and look. look at Nissans as well.
Saab does not produce all fo their parts...and theer are enough Saabs left that aftermarket companies produce parts for that you can pretty much count on them being easy to get for a decade. Ray

Hmmm... the Quantum/Audi units do look pretty handy & 1/3 the price of the Saab option. So these should be supported on the bottom & not just by the ears? I'd order from the 1988 Audi 5000 turbo page so they match my brake calipers. :wink: Any old school Audi owners have memories of these being junk?

I remember them being kind of large compared to the above pictures with the modified 82 carrier bars and Saab mounts. I don't recall ever replacing any that had blown out failed, but some that had drooped.

they work fine on my 5000 & our I5 swap install
they are supported from underneath on the ears, they are not aupported from underneath by the center/body portion.
even on the heavier Audi V8s.
they can/will tear apart if you just pull the motor up w/o losening them.. found out the hard way, and when I part a tough 5cyl turbo I use the engine hoist to seperate the tough one buried & rusted under the turbo. DS is always easy to get to, PS is a pita.

They are used with just the ears supported. The reason they are readily available is they need periodic replacement. I have replaced one a couple times in 11 years in my 5 cyl Syncro Vanagon. In my conversion the driver side rubber mount is closer to the exhaust header than ideal so the high temp seems to shorten its life. The other side is fine but I replace in pairs.

No, I am only using them on my 5 cyl conversion. I do have a set of diesel bars with the Audi mounts installed but I have not installed them yet. I got them as part of a larger deal when I purchased an inline 4 conversion setup from a crashed Westy.
