RA, what was the cost of that 1/4? TCP produce good quality/PPG comparable paint product?

A quart in Velspar was $90 + reducer. PPG still manufactures their DBC-line in clear in a solvent base.

TCP's private line (Custom Shop) is offered in several systems, to fit any budget.

What a difference some lighting will make.

These pictures are pretty accurate as far as cameras go...

Are you sure that's even strato silver or a custom color?

Here's a more recent photo of my car taken a few weeks ago at a local car show. It was a very sunny day

After spending 3 hours at my paint supplier along with my buddy who has worked there for 15+ years(and can get shit done), we came up with a mix formula for Strato silver.

Now, the one thing is that this formula is a Prophet match done by PPG.

In the next few days/weeks, I'll do some sprayouts to see if it looks like it will be close.

Note* this is for PPG's Deltron DBC basecoat system.

Painted my 55 in the garage today. Still in progress....I wish the garage was larger.

Tomorrow hopefully will be the rest, after I roll the shell out.

Haha thanks Chris. It is a code TCP has on file for a 1954 VW strato Silver. It's probably the same mix RareAir used. It turned out awesome. So far anyways, I don't want to jinx myself because I am not done.
The only problem I can find on is is where a bug landed on the 3rd later of clear and I didn't see him while I was spraying #4.
I wish I had a booth so I could have done all the parts in one day.

Ah I see. It looks great though man, good luck with it all, would love to see the finished product. I found a new PPG code that is pretty close too, a Nissan color called Tidewater FAA. Keep us posted.

Posting some photos of my original 1955 strato silver paint. The birth certificate says that's the original color. It was oversprayed in a cream/white maybe in the 70's or later but some original paint on the firewall was spared. Today I took off decades of grease to reveal some beautiful paint. It does not appear metallic to me and barely any blue. It looks mostly grey silver regardless of the light. Of course, as a vision scientist I know that color appearance depends on local color context and it might look more blue if it were not next to the cream or if it were a larger area like the top of the car. And the color that you will see produced by my phone and then displayed on your computer will be something different. ... and now that I am looking closely at the photos with lighting hitting at different angles I start to see more blue.
