presslab, it is too bad that you can't make it.
The site that we are going to this time doesn't have the long windy climb in/out like the last site. We are going in farther into the forest this time. There is a short bumpy sloped section but the rest is a very nice drive. I am totally open to exploring a few of the fireroads on the south end of Coast ridge road or even just going back to the ridge that we tried to camp at last time. Depending on what I get done today I might even be out there tonight. :)
Hopefully you can make it next time. |

I'll be at Monastary Beach by 9:30, Jonathan, and follow you down.
I knew there was something I was forgetting, and I can't spend the night. I do want to see all you guys and I'll cruise up in the hills a bit with my Syncro before coming home.
SD-I forget if those relays work in '85's. If they do do, I would like to have one for my 2WD, as the one you gave me for my Syncro works great. Talk to you tomorrow. |

The programmable relays do work on the early models as well. I will bring your new programmable relay with me.
It looks like all have the relays have found a new home 8) |

Very good
We had a great time despite the failure at the very end on the way out. We found some more camps and options and there is only one trail that we have yet to go down. Some of the stuff we scouted was definately syncro only
It was a great weekend. :D |

I had an amazingly fun time!
Syncrodoka, our lead scout
The places we went just kept getting better, and more beautiful all day long. We had sunshine, the road was damp, so no dust, just a little mud, enough to make big splashes going through.
There were places that were clearly part of the water run off during last weeks storm, ruts, a few rocks, some mud, and wet spots to cross.. What more could you ask for?
After spending the evening around a roaring campfire, eating tritip, and telling stories, we slept overnight in a spot with zero other traffic of any kind, zero noise, except my Espar, which was louder outside than inside. And zero light pollution, with zillions of stars. It was 34F overnight.
On the second day we found a place with both water and big trees, my criteria for maximum fun at a camp site, as pictured in the post by Syncrodoka above.
After that we found one of the most incredible, spectacular, syncro challenge terrain spots I have ever seen in Big Sur. Definitely not for the faint of heart, or those who want to keep their van from being scraped by bushes. Hollister had nothing on this spot, except the crowds.
There are no photos of the most spectacular spots we drove, as I was too busy clutching the steering wheel. And some of the spots we stopped were so incredibly awe inspiring, I could not pick my jaw up off the ground long enough to find my camera. Including ridge top, cliff edge, ocean facing, majestic Big Sur views and terrain. You will have to come to see for yourself.
Here are the iPhotos I took during the drive

if anyone can identify the mushrooms and the skull, I would be interested in learning more.. I think there are russulas, and possibly the skull is a bobcat?
I felt extremely fotunate to be in great company, and with mechanical skills, after my driver front outer CV grenaded.. The faulty axle was removed in about 15 minutes, with no blood, and I ejnoyed a beautiful drive back to Santa Cruz in RWD. |

I enjoyed hanging out with and seeing all you guys. |

Yes, Texxxxx you should come along next time.
Some spots up there are 2wd friendly others are syncro friendly and one was for a driver that doesn't mind putting the syncro through a little workout. We camped, scouted trails, tracked down a small waterfall just because we thought we could hear it in the distance, drove every trail that a van could fit on, fixed a van pretty easily and watched whales migrate south at sunset. Not bad for a winter weekend. :)

Hi Jonathon
At the moment both those weekends are free and clear to cruise and camp.
Lets see what everyone else can do. |

I just realized that the 29th is next weekend and I have the kids. I could go for the day but overnight probably wouldn't happen since they are used to non smoking households...
I could do a overnight the following weekend though.
Some more pictures from last trip
The magical waterfall near the camp that we had to find- yes it is only about 2' tall
Just to the right of the vans is a huge cliff and HWY 1 is a tiny ribbon at the bottom. The trail and camp there took a syncro to get to.
Trailriding
Relaxing at the beach before the drive home
