The local mechanic told me he has seen those come apart in short order. Not sure if the older ones may be better.

this is a very old problem. Cracked boots were happening on OEM CV joints back in the 1970's. Some would last 30,000 miles and some 10,000 miles. A lot of the issue with rubber failing has to do with how much ozone is in the air. You live in an area that has high ozone - forests have high ozone even, and your cv boots don't last as long. If you can get a neoprene or silicone rubber it will last longer. Acura boots for example last well over 100,000 miles.

Back to this problem:

These pics are from boots that were installed last September. They have less than 5K miles on them. Lobros. I've just ordered new ones from Bus Depot and will update you on how long *those* last.

Damn! My crummy Empi boots have done better than that!

Second photo...joints position just doesn't look oriented right. When my bus is jacked up I don't have that kind of positioning of the joint/s. Something is amiss.

Received the Rein Automotive CV joint boots from Bus Depot (Thanks Ron). I noticed that borninabus pic have a date of manufacture that is October of 2008. Mine are listed as Jan of 2011.

borninabus - I assume yours are installed and not shredded yet?

Mine go in on Friday.

my rein boot is still sitting on the self.
just something i found around the shop...

i installed an EMPI  boot a while back just to see what will happen.
my BB "heavy duty" boots are about 4 years old.
one torn and the rest are starting to show their age.

I can't fathom how you let so much dirt accumulate inside your rear wheels.

I'd want to fix the cracked boots before I went at the wheels with a sprayer.

So how are they holding up?

Any update?

borninabus Thu Mar 27, 2014 4:57 pm

maybe not the update you're looking for, but my EMPI boots are hangin' tough.

Golf GTI boots last longer than type 2 boots in my '66 w/'72 Ghia transmission. Axle runs at a wicked angle due to reduction gear boxes being gone.

PO used Levi brand

Held in place with tie-dye wraps? I saw someone in 1975 put a rag next to the overhead cam in his Vega because he lost the oil cap. Wrapped around the cam and broke the head.

617 242 039 is the GTI boot I use.

EMPI's or the identical boots sold in non EMPI packaging from others sources seem to be doing very well at this point. Some have many tens of thousands of miles on them and none show signs of pending failures. For what it is worth, I am running mostly the Valvoline Durablend moly grease in my various rigs.

Same here. 23k miles and not a crack on them. The axles that came in the kit have more surface rust than my original stock axles did though... But that's probably irrelevant.

It's part of why:

1. So many hippies wore cut off jeans as shorts.

2. VW's getting a bad rap by some.

Hello All,

I am in cv boot hell. And it seems I am not alone....

you may find this thread helpful....the car is a vw mk2 1991 8v GTI

http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?6968850-Rein-brand-CV-boots-Nein-Danke

funny thing is though, the Precision/Moog kit i installed to replace the Rein boot POS ripped at the seam after only 6 months...BUT, i think it was my fault, as I over-tightened the clamp on the axle itself, and the Moog boot tore at the seam under the clamp, then spread down the seam.....

The Precision/Moog neoprene boot on the passenger side still looks like new after 2 years(but less than 10,000 miles)

I needed a new boot fast, and the local VW parts supplier got me a GKN/LoBro outer cv boot kit...its made in Italy and appears to be a blend of neoprene(like the Precision/Moog boots) and plastic. I will post updates on the condition/longevity of the GKN/LoBro boot as time goes on...

I will probably try the Rockford boots next after reading of the success you guys have been having with them....

I have over 25k miles on my Rockford boots. There was a point where the part# was incorrect ( They sold me a set), just don't stretch them as far out as stock. I did hear they corrected the glitch.
