Haven't heard that in about 40 years. Lol

Takes me back to Peoria, Ill on the southside and my older sister playing that song on a 45rpm record player probably in the late '60s? Crap, I'm getting old.

Yup. Tommy Roe, 1969.

Jesus, the years do fly by.

Huh?

Well Scott, it seems that this bus building has worn Gary out and I have been selected to keep this thread updated. Patrick has no interest in typing, the new Photobucket, or any of that stuff so I will do my best to keep the thread alive until the build is done.

The last we viewed our heroes the headliner was in. As of last week the windows are in and Patrick just had to install the headliner on the cargo doors before putting those windows in. Patrick has that done now, and has fired up the motor and run it. He is going to swap out the ignition system on it. Bumpers are painted and curing. But that is all stuff that is happening now. Here are some pics from early last week

Let's start with this little screw up. Hey kids, don't attempt a steering box raise on your own if you don't know what you're doing or you'll end up with this.

Okay, that's out of my system...

Patrick's engine all done

Skylight windows in

Trim on, and red insert strip being added

Some overall pics

More updates as time allows.....

The color combination looks great with the red insert!

OHMYGOD!! That is aweesome!

I think I'll go to the shop and burn mine down in shame, er, I mean, wanna do a tradzie??

Spitty1974 Wed Apr 10, 2013 12:29 am

Wow, that was worth the wait! Thanks for the update, that bus is killer!

Can someone school me on the motor? So, I read it is a 914 engine, 2 liter.

I know in the thread they stated mostly stock, but what does that mean?

The guy who rebuilt it, does he advertise on Samba, or is he local in Canada?

Roughly what year would the motor be from?

In terms of reliability, will it function well in a bus, if it is indeed a stock 914?

Obviously, the advantage is horsepower. Is the transmission used on this bus the only set up to use with the motor they used?

What other advantages would there be, as opposed to keeping a stock bus motor.

Thanks for the responses.

Quite an amazing build....what had to be done to correct the steering wheel misalignment? More welding?

And the hits keep on coming.

What a colossal fuck up that is.

I was thinking the same thing. How is that even possible?

My guess is the steering tube hole in the floor isn't where it's supposed to be.

Looking great guys! Keep up the good work, can't wait to see it in the flesh! :D

914 2.0 was produced from 73 to 76. It by far is the best 4cyl 914 motor in the line.

I guess the whole dash moved then as well? Yikes, I would like to know how that will have to be repaired....nothing worse than cutting and welding on an already painted bus.

There was a lot going on on page 2 that may have had an impact.

Major Woody Wed Apr 10, 2013 7:03 pm

Yes, what seems likely is the frame section where the box was raised was tacked in in the wrong position, possibly the result of neglecting to bolt the box to the section and line it up with the pod when tacking. It wouldn't move when doing final welding--at least not enough to explain the top of the column being offset to the left that far.
That's a lot of welding to cut out in a confined space. I would be tempted to shim the box.
