Hi guys, I am doing a ground-up scale model project on an early (1950~1952) Panel Barndoor (check back often for progress). I will do a 3D print in 1/16th scale and then strip it down to cast copies in resin/vacu-form and photo-etch.

This is a sample of the rear engine lid. I did this in Solidworks, and the output will be 1:16 scale. The sheet metal thickness is thick (0.320" in real life size), but will end up being about .020" thick in 1:16 scale due to model building materials and strength required. I appreciate any help I can get, this forum is a wealth of info for this project already, so I'll try not to bother everyone with questions too often.

So you're 3D printing a bus? Bad ass. The bus pictured is a '53 which you probably know. Alot of the details will be different from a 50-52, but the dimensions you asked for should be ok. Except the horn button would be a little lower on the early buses.

I am a Barndoor newbie as far as correct details, so I appreciate the pointers.

The project will be multi-media. Some 3D printing, some vacu-forming, some resin casting and some photo-etch parts. I plan to master the parts in 3D CAD first, then I can disect the assemblies into managable parts with the various methods I mentioned. It will be a long-term project due to the complexity, and the fact that I want to "get it right". I will post progress pics as I go.

Guess it's not a deluxe as you want the non-deluxe dash :cry:

Doing a panelvan first, then maybe a Kombi or Deluxe later.

Here's an idea. :wink:
Do it all in 3d printing.
You can now get a home 3d printer for just under £1000 and they are coming down all the time. If you were willing to share your schematics for a small price, or maybe as a thank you for those who helped. Then I for one would buy a 3d printer just to make one. Looking at the quality of your engine lid, its superb.
Offer that insentive and you'll have barndoor owners at your beckoning call ready to give you the correct dimensions for every washer, nut and bolt :D

Checkout this video of a sand beast that can basically walk out of a 3d printer. How cool! Now imagine a barndoor :D

I should clarify that the B2 value I gave above is measured to the vertical surface that the grab bar is mounted to.

How does this look everyone?

I still need the dimension from the steering column (floor to top of wheel), then I can add the column to this. Need the ØOD of the column too.

That looks awesome!

I don't know how far you want to go with the details, but you may want to pick a production date. The steering tube for example was skinny, then fat in '51, then skinny again as I read on here somewhere.
