If, by "flat version" you mean the non-doghouse style, I think the answer is no. Most, if not all, would agree that the doghouse oil cooler setup is better than the earlier version in every respect. It cools the oil better and also allows the left cylinder head, particularly cylinder no. 3, to run cooler. The engines running the early style cooler had a habit of dropping the head off of the #3 exhaust valve at the most inopportune times (as if there's ever a good time for a dropped valve! :D ). Ask me how I know!

Dale M. Wed Jun 05, 2013 2:30 pm

The early standard cooler was in the air flow of the numbers 3&4 cylinders and cause them to run hot... Was especially bad to #3 which tended to loose exhaust valves.... Going to dog house cooler moved oil cooler out of main airflow to numbers 3&4 and diverted a small air flow through cooler and then out of fan shroud thus the name "dog house"....And cylinders 3&4 run cooler more like 1&2 for temperature...

It's generally considered to be improvement to convert to later shroud and offset cooler.... Only reason for not upgrading may be for concours show VW that has to be "year" correct...

Quote: Regardless of what they rigged up, it appears to be the correct style,

Well given what I saw on the block for a code (AB509445) I am thinking that is a late 1971 / early 1972 motor. If thats the case I believe the doghouse cooler is the "correct" style for that motor.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

So if I go with C15-25138C - SCAT ENT. -9 PC DOGHOUSE FAN SHROUD KIT CHROME

AND

NEW OIL COOLER W/ 10MM HOLES 40HP 1200CC-1600CC - BEETLE 61-70 / GHIA 61-70 / BUS 60-70

Then I should be good right?

jspbtown Thu Jun 06, 2013 1:13 pm

No. That is not the doghouse cooler. That shroud kit requires a doghouse cooler like the one I posted. If you want to run that style of cooler (incorrect for the year I believe and not as good by any means) then you need to get a shroud like this:

Seeing the poor quality of so much "reproduction" cooling tin I think I would use early factory tin and oil cooler over reproduction dog-house cooling.

TSFR Thu Jun 06, 2013 3:14 pm

Shit....well now I'm confused.

Okay so this oil cooler is the better one to get and will fit on my case (with the adapter part) and work better than my original vertical one which was rigged to work?

Did I mention I was confused? So is a shroud without a doghouse smooth on the front and back? And a Shroud with a doghouse has the expansion for the vertical oil cooler on 1 side?

Scott88ag Thu Jun 06, 2013 3:35 pm

Maybe this will help.
This is my rail with a doghouse and the newer style cooler.

Okay what's confusing me is the new style looks like it should mount horizontal with the adapter. Or does the new style mount vertically also? The sand rail pic helps out but what's the difference between the new and old type? Apparently not the way it mounts?

jspbtown Thu Jun 06, 2013 7:21 pm

The old style fits inside the shroud.so yes...the front and back of the shroud are smooth.

The new style is offset so it sits outside of the shroud in its own little "doghouse".

The adapter (which you don't have a picture of) mounts to the two holes on the block and is a right angle. The cooler bolts to this adapter.

]ok, I get it now. When looking at the picture I thought the adapter was already on there for some reason and it would mount to the block sideways.
LOL Glad that's over with! :P

I still have not completely opened the case yet and its looking like next week. Got to get ready for 4 wheeling Saturday and then Wrights field beach NC Sunday for the father in laws 76 birthday!

any thoughts on this?

The carb system that's on it would cost you around $500 new, maybe a bit more. The fan shroud should be tossed in the trash. The alternator would be worth having. You don't know for sure what's going on inside the motor, but it sounds okay in the video. The belt guard is pretty. :)

Will dual carbs fit under my buggy? Okay I have a problem.... more like an illness. I can't things well enough alone LOL! With that said, I have to set limits for myself like no milling. That will keep me in the 1600 range.

Good video of dog house VS standard fan shroud and oil cooler. :D

Not real keen on fan shroud as it does not have good air flow and you are forced to run external oil cooler which is really not necessary...

$1000 (reserve) is cheap... My first question with such a pretty motor is "whats wrong with it".... Recent lower end rebuild in my motor was $400 alone.... And it was basically crank regrind, new bearings and rods and piston rings...

I got the case cracked, And will post pictures tomorrow morning.

Can't wait to see...being a GEX I am betting on carnage.

Hopefully I am very very wrong. Fingers are crossed!

Is that notch on the case supposed to be there on that last domes big washer? is there supposed to be anything else there? Seems to be a lot of movement right there alone.

Looks like they did have 3 endplay shims

TSFR Mon Jun 10, 2013 10:48 am

Anything special about this cam?

All the lifters seem to move freely. Guess I'm going to get neew bearings to start with. See anything obvious? is the crank going to move in and out a little before the flywheel and crank pulley are installed?
