inquiring minds would like to know ;)

A little more progress on the engine.

It wouldn't be a "Hazetguy" build without lots of NOS parts.

Looking good so far

Sorry that I missed the question about the water tank filler tube project. I've shelved it for a while, primarily because I ran out of time in Istanbul before moving back to the USA. I'll still work on it, but have no deadlines.

A bit more progress

Tell the tool of that pulley please.

what?

I still have to decide which oil baffle to use. The one in the pic above doesn't have the compression groove, just gaskets sealed to each side.
Then I have this one, also NOS, with NOS gaskets, that does have the compression groove.
Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Is the pulley a tool? If so, tell how to work it, please.

I've seen the oil baffle shown with only one gasket used and I guess the groove went against the case. I use gaskets on both sides no matter what.

The VW-Audi one is an improved part so VW must think that setup is superior.

the pulley tool is a stock crankshaft pulley with a 10mm head stud welded to it.
the internal bore where it fits over the end of the crankshaft has been sanded with a drum sander to make it a loose slip fit over the crankshaft snout.
the keyway slot has been filed slightly oversize to provide a loose slip fit over the keyway in the crankshaft.
it's easy to push on / pull off the crankshaft snout. it makes rotating the crankshaft during assembly or disassembly very easy, as it gives you leverage to turn the crank rather than using the flywheel.
the pulley 'tool' was shown to me by an oldtimer who was factory trained in the early '60's, as that's what he used when building engines.
i made my own and i've been using it for a long time. it comes in handy.

both oil baffles have the VW-Audi logo stamped in them.

What does the nut do?

Doh, right. I'm sure there are members that know wayyyyyy more about it than me. If you go by this http://oacdp.org/5867part/037.png part A-51 seems they only used the one gasket before the deflector got added. Then they only used the deflector with no gasket. I always use gaskets on both sides so the one with them already would be my first choice.

the nut helps hold the cylinder head to the cylinders. :P

it was probably rusted/frozen to the head stud when i welded the stud to the pulley and just never cared enough to remove it, or add one to the other end of the stud.

Made a lot of progess on the engine today.
Thermostat installed and tested, rocker assemblies cleaned and installed (using NOS German valve adjusting screws), and just a lot of general test fitting, modifying where necessary, etc.

Stopping point for today:

Nice work as always, Jon.

Thanks Sean!

A few more pics, as more progress has been made, leaving just a few things to finish up after a WW parts order arrives.

Since Neil likes oddball NOS parts, an NOS fan pulley nut:

Testing thermostat operation and throttle ring position when in "full open" position:

As it sits now, awaiting a few small parts:

To be fair, who doesn't like cosmoline on their nuts?

Looking good Jon! Can't wait to pick it up in a couple weeks.

Beautiful work Jon! Neal is a lucky guy :)

Very nice vw bus, good job
1400 cc big bore on the engine ?

hazetguy Tue Jul 10, 2018 5:16 pm

Baby steps today, but getting close to being finished.

Grommet for the preheat hose. WW was out, aw shucks, gotta use NOS...

Test fitting the air cleaner, and making adjustments to the rear bracket prior to painting it.

Aw crud, there's no rubber gasket in the air cleaner tube where the air filter part seats into it.
No problem, NOS to the rescue!
