Nice color. I like the shade of blue better than the OG shade.
I had a '71 Safare the same color with a VW roof rack. I sold the van in 89 or 90 for $750.
This is the only pic I have

Thanks! I felt a little worried about deviating from the original colour, but I’m really thankful it turned out so well. That is a cool pic, $750 sounds like a steal for that bus!! Sweet chevy truck in the background too  |

Today, after just over a year, we got the bus back from GLI!
Life’s good! |

Okay, time for me to spill the beans on the future of this bus.
My intention, since long before I even owned my first bus years ago, has been to live in a volkswagen bus. For some reason this seems to be a touchy subject on this particular forum (*ahem*), however I am not too concerned about the opinions of others regarding this dream of mine. Don’t worry, I am not about to post a link to a “gofundme” or anything, that would be embarrassing. This will be a self-funded venture.
I’ll take you all along for the journey with regular photo updates, and probably a dumb question or two. Also, I intend to take my time preparing the bus and myself for this journey, and I am soon attending university to become a helicopter mechanic, so I won’t actually be moving into the bus for at least a little while.
Anyways, that’s the short and sweet of it. Wish me luck  |

Do it. Who cares what people think. I'm sure there will be people who will tell you that it's a dumb idea, but many others will be happy to cheer you on including myself and offer advice when stuff breaks. |

Do it. I'd love to live vicariously through you, and follow along the way. It would help me come to recognize the reason I don't actually want to live out of my van. Though it is appealing sometimes. |

Been driving the bus all over... couple minor issues to work out but nothing big.
Also picked up some vinyl flooring for the bus. Not installed yet but I think it looks pretty good :P
I remember a thread somewhere on this forum about a metal guard/cover for the bottom of the sliding door opening, but I can’t find it now... anyone know where I can find one? |

Went and picked up some nice Baltic Birch Plywood to make the interior panels, cabinet, and bed out of
Was a very snug fit inside the bus

The bus looks fantastic!
Sorry if I missed it but.....what did you do with the wiring? Did they leave the Bluesea boxes or did they/you go back to stock? |

They ended up actually replacing it with a slightly more inconspicuous grey box, tucked a little further up and out of sight. I will most likely use the blue sea panels under the rear seat for accessory fuses... |

Thank you very much for the links and photos, but I’m looking for something more like the ones in this thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=605819
These ones seem to cover the whole painted edge, I know they were common on vanagon westfalias, but I’m not sure where to get one for a bay. I mostly just want to prevent accidental scratches in the paint from oblivious passengers getting in and out of the door.
Getting my bus painted has introduced a whole new level of worry  |

Also had a question for you all. The guys at GLI have discovered that the source of the post-rebuild oil leak was actually a crack in the case where the oil cooler attaches. They have given me a few options:
1. Replace the case at no cost with another used magnesium block that has been machined, as it was before.
2. Pay $1000 (canadian) to upgrade to a new aluminium block.
I have read many conflicting opinions about the two here on the forums. Curious if other bay owners think it’s worth the extra cost to go aluminum.
Thanks in advance. |

You need #2 only if you are drag racing it or building something massive. Bummer about the leak, an engine builder who doesn't like doing things twice heats up that area with a propane torch to see if a crack sweats out oil (also on the flywheel side of #3 cylinder and the bottom of the sump), there's nothing wrong with Mag cases as long as they aren't worn or cracked, even for heavy bus use. |

The stock 1600 dual port in my 71 Westphalia developed a small hairline crack under the doghouse offset oil cooler mount. TIG welded it and has never leaked since, |

This also looks like a good option. I will see if I can find one locally that I can modify! Thanks! |
