Reviving my dead thread. Had to move away from my bus for work so its been sitting in storage for a while. Getting some work done on it over christmas break now, hoping to do the flooring and ceiling in the next few days. I just installed alubutyl sound deadening, nice easy job. Bus is grumpy about sitting... my brakes are leaking and it doesn't start so easy anymore. Probably ethanol in my jets. Oh well we'll figure it out

Leaky brake system

Is it just the broken lower brake fluid reservoir where the fluid is coming from? It looks like it has a big crack in it.

Think so. Although was thinking that may just be the dirty seam on the reservoir. Haven't had a chance to look better just yet, will report back

Beautiful Bus! Pull off the brake fluid reservoir and clean everything up to see if it's just the hose or seal and an easy fix. Curious to hear if you find the sound deadening material helps or not.

Sandblasted my bed brackets at work today, will likely paint them tomorrow. Thankful to work somewhere that makes this sort of thing a breeze. Also thankful my bus came with these full width brackets, its my preferred setup in a bus \:D/

You can hear the difference from the vibration dampened panels when you tap on them, or when you slam the door, but it’s just part of the noise dampening package. I was driving mine without the interior panels and cabinets for a while
Wind noise is worse than anything now on my 71 at highway speeds

That's good to hear, mine was real noisy with nothing inside. Still contemplating on whether to insulate as well

I used the low E insulation on 3 projects so far, it’s light weight and doesn’t absorb water, I used closed cell neoprene foam for the door panel padding

Painted hinges

Decided to go a different route for the floor, initially I had some grey vinyl plank flooring but I'm not so fond of it anymore. So we're going orange 8)
I think it'll go well with the birch ply and the yellow curtains.

Forget if I mentioned already but been working on the ceiling, using matchstick window shades with some vinyl transition strips to hold it up.

Thats all for now. Going to South Africa so no progress for a bit. Will get a few days afterwards however to make a little progress. Hopefully this summer I'll be able to store my bus at my coworkers hangar and will be able to get some more consistent progress happening after work and weekends, rather than keeping the bus 3.5 hours away like I do now.

Looking good! Enjoy the trip to SA.

I used that exact same orange Marmoleum in my Eriba Puck trailer. It looks great and is easy to clean.
My only complaint is that, while it stands up to impacts pretty well, it scuffs easily. Things like dragging a cooler across the floor can end up leaving marks.
Overall though, I was happy with the product and would do it again. Even though I could have installed fine Italian marble tile for less money.
This stuff isn’t cheap.

Ooh the wife and her sister did 5 weeks in South Africa last fall in a truck with a roof tent.
Interesting flooring, I didn’t know Forbo was into flooring, sold their industrial belting for a long time.

Hmmm, good info. I was gonna call around today for some pricing quotes here locally, maybe a vinyl floor of a similar colour would be more durable and cheaper. I'll look into it. Thanks for the advice.

Nice!! Exploring out there with a truck would be amazing. I'm staying at my grandfather's apartment in Cape Town. Likely surfing every day 8)

Forbo is a good word... forbo forbo forbo

I think the Marmoleum holds up better than most flooring options. It's really nice, just maybe not as bomb proof as it was advertised to be.
I specifically wanted something orange for my Eriba, and spent more days than I care to admit going to damn near every flooring place in this city and didn't find anything remotely close to what I wanted.
I think there was only one place here that sold Marmoleum, and they didn't even stock it normally, so it had to be special ordered. For a roll big enough for my trailer (which is about 2x the amount you'd need for a Bus), I think I paid around $800. You'll also need a $50 bucket of the glue and a tile trowel to lay it.
But again, no regrets with it. I think you'll be happy and it will look great in your Bus!

The 12 x 12 linoleum tiles are still available in a zillion different colours

We went with a vinyl membrane (aka Duradek)

We had the cheaper version from Home Depot on our back deck for 16 years through winters, and dog/people traffic so I’m sure it’s going to be good for the floor. We went to the local deck place and asked for what they had in roll ends and they had 5 or 6 pcs that we chose from for $100. This stuff also has a texture for traction with wet feet or shoes. No orange, but some cool leaf and gravel patterns . The wife wanted light and grey tones, so we ended up with the arctic quartz pattern

Talking to my swedish grandpa today, he mentioned;
"you know my first car was a volkswagen"
"Oh me too!"
"Yes, mine was a green beetle, I got in 1962"
"Oh, yea some of those old ones with the little back window"
"Yes, mine had the little window with the line in the middle..."

I'll see if I can get some photos or slides or something. He probably has a treasure trove of old vw pics, he spent a lot of time travelling in various old cars in Africa/Europe

Anyway, to keep it "bay", here is a postcard I found

Playing with the bus today, put on some vent shades and working on the headliner.

These vent shades were a pain to fit. The felt is fighting me  oh well. They're on there, although to get the center screw hole closer I'm gonna have to work with it a bit more.

Also got my vinyl strips in the mail, so I've started getting the headliner in. Bit of an awkward job but doable with help from mum :) The sound deadener material is visible through the gaps a bit, and I'm concerned about condensation forming on the inside of the roof still, so I'm thinking of glueing up some thin felt back behind the headliner to solve those issues. Hum hum...

That's all for now. Happy bussin

dumptuck Thu Feb 20, 2025 6:55 pm

Completed headliner, for now. I may trim the sides a bit, its a bit bunched up there. But it will do for now.

Probably tackling the floor next
