Anyone know why there is this black dust building up on my tensioner and at the bottom of my heat shield and alternator?

Glenn Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:41 am

The pulleys are not aligned.

I have the same system on my Thing. Check to see if the belt is in the center of both the upper and lower pulley.

Mine put out a bit of 'black dust' for the first couple of drives, but cleared up after that.

is there and easy way to tell? I looked on the sides and of my bug and it looks straight? do I need to shim the pulleys? I just go a shim kit but font know what to shim. Is this a shim it and see if it work trial and error type thing? any advice is greatly appreciated.

do i need to raise or lower the car to do this? remove anything? etc.

could my belt tensioner be off?

Glenn Thu Mar 08, 2018 1:21 pm

Something is rubbing the edges and the tensioner does not.

Put a straight edge from one pulley to the other-that should tell you which will need to be moved and in what direction.

Look at the shoulders on the crank and alternator pulley. One of them will be polished and will tell you which way to move the pulleys.

Ill try the straight edge tonight. As for seeing something polished.. i do not. After about 500 miles on this engine these MST Raptor style pulleys still show black.

I would need to remove my engine to adjust this will I?

No, it's just in the pulley system. Is the pulley on the alternator one made for that belt?

You mean like a serp pulley on the bottom and a v belt on the top? Really??

evillrdnikon Thu Mar 08, 2018 10:37 pm

Lol
Yea the belt is made for That pulley. It’s not a V

so i looked closely at my pulleys and they are still black and not showing any polished wear. just wanted to provide that update

Thats because the rubber is softer than the metal. It will show wear first

so if the belt is rounded off on one side then i want to extend that pulley does that sound right?

Its Totally Normal.

It will show belt dust like that for first 10,000 miles till the pulleys have the serpentine edges wore. It can be perfectly aligned and still do that. Also, if the pulley is even slightly off, you will know it cause it will try crawling off the pulley. If you hear a "click... click ...click"... hurry home, cause your belts about to take the short cut home. I had to put the crank spacer to get it aligned.

Bring a big adjustable wrench with you, cause you will need to tighten up the tension 2-3 times before the belt stops stretching.

I have the same MST setup and went thru this on my daily over the last year. Even after 10K, im still getting alittle dust, but its not as much.

Odd.. I replaced the serp belt on my wife's Honda and never saw and black dust.

Your wifes Honda doesn't have billet grooves like the MST pulleys. It has perfect steel pulleys with no sharpness whatsoever.

Well i guess i'll have to tell the owner to expect it when we finally fire up this beast.

Personally I think they're stupid, but the customer wanted it... along with the red engine tin.
