+1 for the flame king 1lb canisters

PDXWesty Mon Oct 30, 2023 1:20 pm

I've used a refill adapter successfully to refill the 1 lb cylinders. Many different options on Amazon.

Point taken about refillable tanks.

Never-the-less...... a great price on these cylinders.........

x2 on the Amazon valve to refill green cannisters. Actually went to the local dump/transfer station to reuse a couple of empty ones, and the first one I grabbed was half full!

I get the recycle, reduce, reuse thought process.
My stumbling block is when one is on a long trip (mine are typically a month or longer) one does not have easy opportunity to refill one pound containers.

Yet it is very easy to pick up additional one use containers along the journey.
I don’t desire to fill up my limited storage space with initially full and then eventually empty containers that I must carry home to refill.

How many will I use?
It depends on the weather along the journey, it is mainly for spot heat and hard to predict.

That is a limitation for the refillable ones.

At Acadia National Park CG, they are piled up outside the trash bins. Plenty are 1/2 full, 1/4 fill exactly. When I showed a young nephew this, he went around getting them and three families had free fuel for the week!

Note, there have been accounts of re-filled ones leaking and Flame King's refillable 1-Lbs ones were recalled at one time because of such, but they have had recalls on big tanks as well. Anyways, be careful out there.

On my Baja trip, I had a total of 4 green refillable 1lb bottles with me.

I had a huge 11lb propane tank in my rocket box. Way too much weight for my pop top. It took my wife and I to both open and close the pop top.

I only once had to refill all of my propane bottles. I think next time I go, before I enter Mexico ensure my canisters are all filled. Then while in the States hopefully find someone on the Van Alert app that will allow me to refill my 1lb bottles.

Honestly, in Baja, I am sure I could find someone with a propane tank that I could pay $20 to refill all 4 of my bottles. I'd just carry my own adapter/filling hose with me.

Also, this is my 'refiller' adapter. It works nice with the shutoff valve.

CONGRATS! where can I send you a set of 250lb lift assists for the Jack Bombays as a wedding present? (Serious, What's app me)

I was also surprised about the "wife" part! Congrats!

Gotta ask, if you're carrying around that squatty propane tank, why not ditch the refillable tanks altogether and just run off that tank?

Was going to mention the same. I got a hose that has a 1lb fitting on the end that lets me use my 10lb tank with my camping stove and bbq.

Thanks! It happened earlier this year after spending 3 months living together in the van.

Thank you!

Well, we were constantly moving. Nearly every other day a new spot. It would have been a hassle to hook up the big tank at each location. The little 1lbs take up very little room in the westy cabinet.

But also - I want to point out that the whole experience made me miss my stock OEM propane tank.

Wow Brandon, Congrats from us as well!

We just passed 45 years, and wish you same. Nothing beats it.

Good for you! Sadly, it seems that few relationships seem to endure the test of time. Too much work required?

My Wife and I have been together 53 years..... married for 48.

Not always a daily walk in the park but there is a richness that comes with shared history.

And..... back on topic .... kind of......

We've been using and discarding small propane tanks the entire time!
Started with the tall skinny ones...... then for some unknown reason they brought out these short fat tanks we all use today.
We had gas camping appliances designed for the tall skinny ones. Rare do I ever see one of the old tank design in the stores today!
A TX-700 Coleman Horizontal tank lantern comes to mind..... what a great lantern that was....... but alas..... no propane tanks available ...... also had a companion single burner stove.

Thanks, yeah, the tall thin tanks haven't completely vanished but have become increasingly difficult to find.

And my apologies to my environmental friends......
but......

If the guilt gets to Ya, I’ll help with blow-up.

And Yes, people give up mates way too easily... or they weren’t being objective going in. Or we got lucky meeting in our teens.

Or pizza in the East simply devastates pizza in the West (FACT!).

tall thin tanks are in every plumbing supply isle.
they do cost a little more than the short fat green ones.
but they are marketed for plumbers.. vs campers for use/consumption volumes

Not only Pizza but any areas even slighty away from the New York City/New Jersey area haven't the faintest idea about what a GOOD Bagel actually is!
I'm 2 hrs West of NYC ..... the Bagels here in Reading Pa are HORRIBLE!
