Mac owns it for the notoriety of it. He'll take it to the Octo Aniversary Meet park it and then go and have breakfast and party with Lenny and come back at noon to pick it up. Like what the F@#$??? I remember he owned it for a month and wanted HTVW's to do a feature on it. I think he enjoys VWs but doesn't love 'em like Horny did!
Dime of the month baby!
I still have all those old Hot Vw's write ups on Hornbecker. |

Hot VWs did a feature on it waaay back in '84 Heck, even VolksWorld had a feature on it back in the early 90s |

OK, just as a baseline number, what's the highest dyno number anyone actually knows about (bona fide, not bar talk)? |

From what I've heard its a LOT of money and you have to do a substantial number of sets for the company to make them... and the company keeps the tooling :( |

If someone did make some bearings there would be that little quality control issue as well as cost per set.I recall some of those Repco and plain wrapper bearing sets from Valleycore/Nuhorizon(garbage).I think most would be really suprised just how much 36hp "stuff" is being hoarded out there (cases, heads, cranks etc, etc). Not to mention the number of complete engines stashed in shops and garages. As for real dyno numbers, only time will tell.I think it would be more fun to run it and find its blow up point, though.Gearing is going to be a very important part as well. |

I just finished reading a tech article from 1960 about a 36hp with Okrasa heads, dual carbs and stinger exhaust running 8.5 to 1 compression ratio dyno'd out at 78 hp, I would assume a set of worked stock heads could be within 10% of that since they don't breathe quite as good, but that would still be around 70hp, what do you think Mr. Motorhead? |

Sorry to diverse slightly, but is there anybody building this type of engine? Any recomendations? I wouldnt mind one for my bus. Not much interest in this sort of thing in the UK at the moment. |

I think Mr Motorhead is developing some counterbalanced cranks and possibly some highflow heads for 36hp. |

Here are a couple of pics of multi carb engines on the cheaper side, coupled with stroker crank, higher grind cam and better ignition you could really do something on the cheap! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=105898 http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=105897 |

here is another early 70's era page on tuning the 36hp, but they were very conservative with what they did http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=106951 |

Here's a short little article on different performance mods for 36 hp engines, from "Making It Go":
http://okrasa.pre67vw.co.uk/literature/images/making_it_go.pdf
It covers superchargers, Okrasa, etc.
Are there stroker cranks out there for 36 hp engines? I've been hunting around and have found that a few companies will make custom cranks, but they're $2K on up from what I've seen. I wonder what getting someone to make a batch of a hundred or two would cost. . . think there's enough interest out there for that sort of thing? |

Just a short update.Unlike many who just talk,I go out and do it.Stroker cranks arrived today, they look great.Left to right in picture.....stock 64mm stroke,70mm stroke, and 74mm stroke.A variety of cam grinds should be here in a week or so and a four count of heads will be welded for bigger intake ports next Monday. And yes I do have some 36hp stock rebuild heads left.

Would a 40hp (small wrist pin) 69 stroke roller beraing crank fit into the early 36hp case? I have the crank but I don't have a case lying around anymore to mock up. Also, does anyone have the skinny on the main bearing modification for this crank. Bill Fisher mentions it in his book but does not give details |

36hp and Porsche cranks are what fits in the 36hp case.40hp-1600 cranks are longer.Your roller crank is good for a high RPM spin, but not something that would be good to get stuck in traffic with since the rods are oiled by splash and not a drilled passage.Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what you need to do for the mains on that 40hp roller crank is open up the oil holes in the bearings to get a better oil volume to the crank. That and stuff at least a 26mm-30mm oil pump in the case. |

From what I've read, horizontal grooves are cut in the mains to spray oil at the roller bearings in the rods. The one bearing I got with the crank has a small triangliar groove on the outside of the bearing from the oil input hole towards the outside edge. I'm curious how big/deep etc these grooves are supposed to be. I agree that a large oil pump would have to be used. |
