It's defineatly a do-able thing Alan.Did a few numbers on just a stock displacement with some minor cam and head mods and that came out to around 56hp (on paper).70-80 HP does not seem far fetched with some displacement changes. The whole point of this exercise is to use the ol' noodle and not just go out and buy a bunch of "stuff" off the shelf to make a performance engine. |

That mtor wasn't "off the shelf" either,my dad toyed with the idea and it made good power, plus looked sano in the back of his '55! He would show it to people and they would laugh at it saying it had to be underpowered, then proved them wrong by hauling ass up hill! |

I have heard people talk about the "power curve" of some distributors being better then others. Can someone explain what the benefits of the different (centrifugal vs vacuum ect.) distributors are. What should I be looking for at the next swap meet. |

I've sourced a good deal of parts here lately and have decided to go ahead with a 36hp catalog soon. All the normal things to build an engine.......pushrod tubes, lifter sets, gaskets,a variety of different cranks, cams, rebuilt rods, heads (performance and stock),sumps, manifold and linkage kits for dual carbs, etc. Many of these custom fab peices I'm doing right in my own shop. You'll see me at Bakersfield this weekend if you go with good deal of things to look at.We are even in the process of doing a custom exhaust. I think this stuff would be fun to run ala dry lakes style to see how fast it will go......... |

I have vented valve covers on my '53. They are vented with a tube the divides the valve cover in half from top to bottom. The one in the picture seems to have the tube. |

The latest issue of Hot VWs magazine (May 05) has an interesting article on some cool new 25/36hp speed goodies including the valve covers shown above. Stuff like cams, oil coolers, 28PCI venturis etc.... Good stuff for sure. |

And just think, you all got to see these ideas unfold right here on the Samba FIRST before anybody else thoght of doing a write up in any Mag about it.How many people are doing this with 36hp?More than just me I'm sure now that it sounds like a good idea.I'm setting up a new site just for 36hp parts,it's in my tag line.Parts that are new, rebuilt and NOS for a sane price.I'll have a few things up on sale at the new site in a couple days,so I hope you'll visit. |

Just as a reminder if you're thinking of taking the Supercharger route is that using a blower gives you an effective boost in CR. Depending where your static CR is you can easily run into detonation and serious overheating problems if you alter that CR.
This chart will give you a rough guide...bearing in mind a Judson in top condition will give you 6psi:

Since there is so much interest in things 36hp,let's bump this to the top again with some pictures of some head reconstruction........these are real meaty heads,so there is lots of room to do "things".None of it is rocket science and it's all been done before. Finally got a little time to make a boring plate to do the milling on the port area as it needs to be perpendicular to the valve cover seating area.Bear in mind that this is just the rough and not the finish, the port will be somewhat larger when done with the studs relocated to reflect the new port size.Stock head is shown for comparison.Only slight mods for the cylinder tins need to be made to allow for the manifold base plate that will use a paper gasket rather than a copper crush ring. Next up is 33mm intake seats and porting and polishing the exhaust.Stay tuned, more to come.

I had talked with Fred Simpson, of Performance Technology, about spreading the 36hp intake manifold stud pattern out to 1600 single-port size, which is something Fred had done OVER TWENTY YEARS AGO.....
Fred made a 36 horse-cased engine run 13's in the quarter-mile, in a stock weight Sedan, back in the mid - 80's... |

Sorry you took what I said out of context,Dave.I was refering to the current magazine write up,not the originality of the ideas them self.If you read one of my recent posts I say right there that that this is neither rocket science or any thing new. This is kind of a rehash for me when I did the same thing from about 15 years ago.It was nothing new then either.Planning to do something and actually doing it are two different things.I'd really like to see more people actually do this rather than talk about it.It took me a suprisingly small amount of time to source the things I don't have the equipment to do (which amounted to crank and cam grinding),and even less time to make the tooling for the machines I do have in order to do 36hp parts. So from someone who is actually "doing" something I have to ask, what is keeping you from doing rather than just "planning"? |
