1960 Kombi, 50,210 Original Miles, Sliding Glass Cab Divider, Unbelievable Survivor!
Well, if you have ever found yourself wishing there was a time machine to take you back to the early 1960's in order to have the opportunity to buy a brand new VW Bus at the dealership, this is your chance.
This mindblowing 1960 Kombi has the equivalent of 3 years of use since new. It is a Sealing Wax Red beauty with just 50,210 original miles on it, no BS, just the facts.
Those of you who have been around the scene for a long while may remember seeing it featured in the March 1986 issue of Hot VWs in an article by a well known
ex-SOTO President and World famous Bus afficionado. He was so impressed with this Bus at that time, 22 years and just 14,000 miles ago, that he called it "the cherriest Kombi I've ever seen or heard of". That's a pretty big statement, I think you'll agree.
The known history of the Bus was that it was purchased new back in 1960 by a Egg Farmer. It mostly hauled eggs around for the first 20 years of its life which attests for the unbelievable condition of the interior of the Bus. During the farmers ownership it acquired approximately 30,000 miles after which he sold it to a very well known and long-time VW collector from Seattle. Since his ownership it has passed through the ownership of a few collectors, at one time it was part of a large car museum collection, and the exterior was repainted the original Sealing Wax Red a handful of years back to a ultra high standard using only the best paint, Glasurit.
The finish is truly spectacular and will likely be found to be more impressive in person than it is in pictures. The beauty is that it was not overdone as many Buses these days are. It is not full of high-build primers and fillers to make a "false" mirror of the sides. It still maintains the factory-stamped panel shaping with the original wave and spot welds that they had on the assembly line. The Kombis absence of interior panels and bare flat gray interior walls makes it easy to see the gentle, DRY, and accident free life this Bus has lived. That is testimony to this Bus' true virgin condition.
Another amazing achievement is that this Bus is still powered by its original Bastard 40hp Engine complete with all the correct parts including the aircleaner, fuel pump, distributor, tin, generator stand, etc. It runs exactly as it should and doesn't miss a beat, having undergone a thorough rebuild just 13,000 miles ago with the receipt to document it. Mechanically the Bus is excellent and has been said to drive "like new" by the Bus collectors who have driven and ridden in it. Everything is stock throughout, still 6 volt electrics, original transmission, and everything down to the new bias ply tires is the way it would have left the factory.
This Bus also features a highly unusual original option of the factory installed sliding glass cab divider that was special ordered by the Egg Farmer. Other ultra cool features include working original manual choke, working Blaupunkt in-dash radio, working fuel reserve valve system, currently registered 1956/1960 YOM California License Plates which will remain with the Bus if it stays in California, the original key that operates the ignition and all door locks, a copy of the Hot VWs magazine it was featured in, all original documentation that has remained, original dealer preventative maintenance and service booklets, etc.
There are certainly not many low mileage Buses of this level still remaining in the world today and this is truly an opportunity to own a Bus that is essentially as good as it gets.
