|

'87 Syncro
Is there any way to repair the power mirror motor? I took off the glass and took the actual mechanism off the mirror housing. When I hook ground to brown and put positive to the 2 of the other wires nothing happens. When I put positive to the 3rd of the wires it makes a noise but doesn't move. Seems like it is seized. I sprayed with WD-40 but no help. I can manually move the mechanism in any direction without any problem. Teeth on the motor gears and so forth look good. I thought about putting a 18 or 24 volt battery to it to try to free it up but not sure if that will fry it. It basically looks like an oversized slot car motor.
Are replacements for just the motor assembly available?
I think I now know why somebody cut all the wires in prep for a paint job rather than taking the time to disconnect. _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

Hi 7Thing3:
The mirror motor needs current to both the electric clutch and to the motor to do its work. Another observation: It looks identical to the mirror motor used on the many thousands of Audi 5000's Audi 100's Audi A4's etc. Unlike VW, all the Audi models had power mirrors, so a wrecker/dismantler will have lots of them. The harness may not be identical, but the rest would likely be identical.
Good luck! |

This is just a thought, but did you check to make sure the wires aren't broken where they enter the front of the door. I had the same problem. I could hear a "click" but the mirror wouldn't move. I found broken wires at both doors. This was the passenger side mirror, btw. The drivers mirror worked fine. I read where this is a common problem. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |

I'm way beyond that. The wires were cut and the mirror removed somewhere before I got it. I did try to hook up the 5 wires and only got clicking. Then I removed the "guts" of the mechanism and am just hot wiring direct from a spare battery.
Does anyone have a diagram of what each color does? _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

I was able to get the mirrors moving in all 4 directions on the bench with different wire combinations. Could be the switch, can't get eiher mirror to do more than click so that would lead me to believe it's a switch issue. _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

Could be broken wires in the rubber accordian thing in the door jam- super common. Do a continuity test to check that the wires are still in one piece. |

How often do you actually use the power motor feature? I have power mirrors but both motors are not functional. That doesn't bother me a bit as I can just manually adjust them. They click when you push on the glass to the same range as the motor would allow. |
When I bought the Syncro the mirrors were off and the wires were cut so it was staring me in the face. Although I have a million and one more important tasks I am now chasing my tail on this one. The best part is it will most likely cost me the price of a roll of electrical tape and a few connectors! _________________ '73 Thing--Ted

OK, so about 4 hours later and about 16 splices of wire that was cut either by the door or the PO I now have functioning mirrors. Oh, and the range sucks and I even cut off the stop tabs.
Might have to grab some of Pawel's LT mirrors:
