I read somewhere that the very late(77-80) bugs had a third wiper speed, not just slow and fast. Is this true, and was it a function of a relay/switch/motor?

79 convertibles only.
If you are really good with electricity, find the intermittent wiper switch for an A1 Golf, and the relay and you can make it work. The new Mexican Beetles had intermittent wipers.

A1 Golf, as in US spec Rabbit? Just so happens that's my wife's preffered breed of VW. Should be easy then.

You have to find the correct VW relay. I did this job a long time ago on my '75 1303 and it took me a few attempts to work out the correct wiring from looking a various manuals, and experimenting. I'll see if I can find the details and post them here.

The relay gives intermittent wipe function when you pull down the stalk, you may need to cut off a bit of plastic on the steering column cover to do this. You also need to check if your wiper switch is the correct one with all the necessary contacts - if all the wires / pins are present in the white plastic connector under the column (ie no blank spaces), then you're OK.

One nice function is that if you have the correct switch, you can also connect an electric washer pump if you choose to do so, as the contacts are there and close when the stalk is pulled back. The relay also has the function that when you pull back the stalk to wash the screen, it automatically turns on the wipers for three or so sweeps. Just like a modern car! Very Happy

And I'm perfectly willing to go pull a steering column from a later car. I know of 2 79's in my area, but neither are verts. Hell, I've been using Rabbit and Jetta wiper motors as replacement bug motors for a while now. You just have to figure the wiring and add a fuze on one line and you've a stronger motor.

Well, looks like sammypsycho beat me to it, but here goes anyway:

If the picture doesn't show, sorry Embarassed it's in my gallery, look there.

I can't remember where I got the relay from, might be an early Golf (Rabbit in US). You need to check the part number though, as some of the Golf ones have extra terminals and might not work the same way.

You also need to check that your wiper stalk has all the necessary connections to make it work, look for the second row of contacts, or check the number of wires coming off it.

It's not written in my notes, and my Bug is 100 miles away in London so I can't check, but I seem to remember that the wire for an electric washer pump was black & red. Can anyone else confirm?

Hope this helps anyway.
