Has this been covered?
I am thinking of converting to IRS so I dont wear tires/get the stupid NC look when lowered. Iv'e seen several great threads on converting to IRS, but I want to keep the early bolt pattern. Are there any special parts I should be getting? Or can i bolt up my back plates and drums and be down the road? I have no experince with the IRS cars, so I dont know exactly how it all bolts together.
thanks

According to the parts books, the rear should be a straight drum swap only. No need to switch anything else. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I think parts of it have covered. The drums swap over directly, without the need to change shoes or backing plates. But you'll need to do something about engine support, as the IRS uses the engine hanger bar, while the SA uses forks to support the trans. You can either weld on some forks to the IRS sub frame, or weld in some engine hanger support brackets to the body, and use a case with the 3 mounting lugs for the hanger bar. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Talk to Derrick about the 70... I dunno what the plans for it are, but it has an IRS tranny that worked before the engine was pulled. If you guys part it out, I want those wheels back though. If the car lives, the wheels stay with the car. _________________

So, you can just take a 5-bolt drum and mount that in place of the existing 4-bolt drums? I always was under the assumption that even the axles were different. Hmm... _________________ Pit Bull Myths, Busted!

You have to remove the 4 lug hubs with the drums. Then it's a direct swap. I think you're confusing using short t-1 axles here, as the 5 lug t-3 drum nose, or 4 lug hub nose needs to be trimmed 9/16ths of an inch for use with short t-1 axles. IRS stub axles however, are the same length as t-3 axles, and are a direct swap. My son converted his 76 bug to wide 5 using t-3 rear brakes, and earlier bug 5 lug drums. It was all a bolt on swap. The big problem comes from trying to convert the discs to 5 lug. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

BITCHIN!
I am thinking I will go with the weld on IRS hangers to the SA sub. Since I seem to have 2 extra laying around and dont want to weld engine supports to the body.
Avey- he said he was going to get in touch with you about the car. I have a roof clip and told him if he want it, its his if he can find me a fastback roof clip. but if he wants to part it then i want the irs and possibly pan sections. youll get the wheels no problem.
thanks
