Hey... I always get a great helpful answer here so I'm going to continue to ask, I def need the helpful ideas.... The hole where my pass side mirror will mount has lost its grooves for mirror to screw into. Just seems to have worn out due to weather and time, I can figure a way to get a nut on other side that will work, but curious about other solutions and/or the best way. I'm sure common problem... Thanks in advance. Cheers. Jimmy |

Jimmy, the hole is just a hole. Never had threads. There's ALWAYS a nut on the inside. Both doors. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

I was wondering the same thing but instead of having the possibility of having a huge hole in my door and welding on the paint found out that you can use a karman ghia mirror mount that just mounts up with 2 sheet metal screws |

I installed a mirror on Elwood's passenger side using the nut shown above except I got mine, along with the mirror, from WW. However, I did not weld it in place and it works fine. Of course, if I ever have to remove the 'mirror socket', I'll need to remove the door panel to 're-install'. Nevertheless, there will, probably, be no need to ever remove the socket; if the mirror ever needs replaced, that can be done without changing the mounting socket. Perhaps, maybe, a little JB weld on the nut, after it's installed, would hold it long enough for a 'complete change out'.
The install was no big deal either; just some careful measuring, then, a small hole and enlarged to the proper size using a 'stepped bit'.
Well, good luck and I hope this helps.

Hey...thanks again for all responses....I do have hole and nut for drivers side, all installed and good to go. The welding done on inside so no markings on paint, someone had asked about that..in regards to using another vw mounting, I like idea, but want both sides to match...driver side done with interior mounting .... pass side I want to look the same. I will get some pictures of my 68 and some various projects. I'm not the best at this stuff by any means but enjoy getting a little better all the time. I ordered a mounting nut for pass side from jbug and will keep you all posted. In the mean time I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks. Again for all the help. Jimmy |

Hey ZBB will you look inside the door for the nut before you drill? Love the tutorials by the way. |

Jimmy, I just held it in place while I screwed in, what I call, 'the socket'. If I remember correctly, there was some kind of 'rubber sealing washer' and I just tightened the socket 'sufficiently'; then, I installed the mirror and tightened the spring which controls the 'rotational movement' of the mirror. After that, you tighten the nut on the bottom which controls the 'front to back' movement. Job done.
Hope this helps.

My method was similar to Mort. I made a template from the driver's side, drilled a small pilot hole and double-checked my measurements. Then I drilled the final sized hole and filed it smooth.
Next, I clamped the correct metric nut to a stick, and held it up inside the door until I could spin the mirror mount tight. I used some Loctite, and it's held up for several years so far.
I elected to buy an OEM VW mirror (can't remember if it was Mexico or Brazil), as it matched the German original:
