Figured I'd start a new thread for our 1968 diamond blue Beetle that we decided to name Mabel. This will not be a restoration, just tidying up a bit. Drove her home this past Saturday in a horrible 128 mile snow storm, but she got me home safe and sound. She's rock solid, no rot, no repairs, just a 47 year old Beetle that still has a lot of life left in her. She's sitting in the garage now, still dirty from the trip the other day. A clean up is in the near future and this will be her thread.

I think that August 1967 up to July 1968 was the zenith blue and beyond that was the diamond blue...

Didnít realize the roof racks were so expensive, prices range from $177 to $269 for the powder coated steel racks from EMPI to $400+ for some other stainless steel brands. I like the racks, I think itíll add a bit of nostalgia to the overall appearance of the Beetle. I ordered mine from Dunebuggywarehouse out of Hamilton, Ohio via Ebay. Hope itíll be here in just a few days!

Look on the bright side; you can't take the money with you (although I've known several who thought they could Crying or Very sad ) and you're helping the economy by keeping that money in circulation. Laughing

The clouds parted and the sun finally poked through. Temp right around 40 degrees, itís a welcome sign. However, we have no water. Apparently, the city is fighting a few water main breaks, so itís hard telling when itíll be back on. So what to do while youíre waiting for the Daytona 500 to start? Work on the Beetle! Would love to get her out of the garage for a nice long bath, sheís still filthy from last weeks trip from Lexington in a snow storm. But no water and the wind still has a bite to it, maybe next week. I did notice that the bright light relay wasnít working when I bought the car, the steering wheel was dirty and the horn only worked when one side of the horn lever was pushed. Lets start there. While nosing around, I found the original bill of sale. Seems I was wrong about the color, it is in deed zenith blue, not diamond blue. She was $2108 brand new. Wow! Disassembled the steering wheel assembly, cleaned it in the snow because we have no water. Polished the horn lever, cleaned the contacts for the bright light switch, now everything works! Iíll probably have to replace the turn signal switch. Itís original and very clean, but the plastic has deteriorated. Since the plastic pieces are riveted in, Iím guessing that they canít be replaced without replacing the whole unit. But for now, the horn works properly, turn signals work and the bright light switch worksÖ.thatís a good start..

Mabel started life as an autostick. I would give anything to have those original engine tarboards in the back that have the proper ATF tank filler neck and vacuum hose cutouts! You also still have the original ashtray with the autostick shift pattern- those can fetch a tidy sum so I'm told.

They are original early Porsche Fuchs, 5.5 in front, 6" in the back. The Flat Four or Empi reproductions are pretty decent, and a fraction of the cost of originals. FWIW, the Gas Burners look nice on your car, I wouldn't change them.
