How's the shifter bushings?
I think I just loosened my shifter bolts a bit and put it in reverse or second, and snugged them down. I had to do a little bit more fiddling, but eventually figured it out. _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

Those.
Also make sure your coupler at the transmission is good and in the proper place. _________________ © CJ Industries, Inc.

this is what it looks like once i get everything else lined up correctly...its next to impossible to get the shifter in there.and i can reverse the process and then its impossible to get the hockey stick lined up with the shift linkage |

How about just spinning the shifter untill it lines up with the linkage? |

Put something on the shifter rod to protect the paint, clamp on some vice grips and give it a spin, helps if someone is under there to let you when alined |

You might try loosening the bolts before you attempt to spin the shifter if you decide to do it that way.
Getting the shift rod and guide to stay up against the floor while you push down on the shifter can be a pain. Try stuffing a block or rag under the shift rod to support it and it will make your life easier.
Everything in the picture you posted should be covered in grease which might be easier to do before you get it put together. It makes for a messy job but if you find a method that works for you first before you grease everything you should be able to get it without making to big of a mess once the grease is involved. |

things that are wrong in this pic:
-NO GREASE! you need to have grease in the ball socket of the shift rod, the ball at the end of the shifter, on the spring and cap that bolts to the floor.
-the pin on the shifter is not engaged in the slot of the shift rod/shifter is not properly seated in the shift rod.
-shift plate appears to be all the way to one side, preventing proper shifter movement. this is adjusted by loosening the 2 bolts and sliding the shifter base and plate.
-the shift plate appears to be installed incorrectly, rotated 180 degrees off. the "tab" sticks up on the left side, the sloping part to the right, as seen in this pic. front of vehicle is towards the top of the pic, left is left, right is right. (bay plate shown, but the orientation is the same on all):
