I realize I have a couple posts going on this engine build.
It is a type 1 case, and continuing the build.
I am shopping for used generator and cooling fan.
Will a generator and fan off of a 68 work on a 72 1600 dp? _________________ T-roy

Yes, although you might have to change the push on spade terminals to bolt on ones. Of course your existing generator might have already been swapped. After 40+ years anything is possible.
I'd look in the Samba classifieds for the fan shroud or contact either Joel or ISP West for one. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I am getting ready to mount the air intake and carb.
On the intake ports in the head, do I use paper or metal gaskets? I have an engine gasket kit that has both.
Thanks

I use the paper, it's more forgiving and can be re-used. The metal ones are one time use. |

Yup, I prefer thick paper ones, or use the metal ones for templates and cereal boxes for the gasket material. The metal gaskets cause a vacuum leak, due to the small hole in them. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Hey,
I am closing in on the build completion. I am putting on tin and doghouse.
I'd like to get some recommendations on a good exhaust solution to go with. I don't have the heat exchangers or any other exhaust parts. There seem to be lots of options. Can I go with J tubes instead of the heat exchangers? Does that complicate things and/or drive me to a few distinct options of mufflers and other parts?
Thanks

I wouldn't run a "Monza" muffler as those kill HP. Any good t-3 header should work fine though. Keep in mind you'll need type 3 "J" pipes as they're about 2 inches longer than bug/bus parts (BTDT and welded on some pipe to fake them). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

My Bad! To clarify, this is for a type 1.
With that said, any thing to add or some different recommendations?

this piece of tin fell out from between the 1st and 3rd cylinders when I was feeding the cooling flap rod between the cylinders to connect to the thermostat while I installing the doghouse.
Can someone tell me where this piece belongs.
Thanks

Here is a shot from the samba gallery. You can see that piece of tin and how the cooling flap linkage passes through it. Those tabs simply press in the fins on the underside of the cylinder head.
