Way back when I was a junior in high school we had "open" campus where students were allowed off campus for lunch. We walked to a local Mickee_Dees, getting in line behind a guy in mechanic or technician uniform with his 5or6 year old daughter by his side. A rather large woman was at the counter placing her order. The woman's beeper started to go off. The guy's little girl tugged on his pants leg & said, "watch out daddy, that woman is backing up."
Being young & immature we snickered. We got some context when the man & girl got in his service truck which started beeping very loudly as he was reversing. |
This one goes back to the late ‘80s. Thread should be retitled - “Funny Stories that actually happened to you”.

Here's one from the early 80s that happened to me. When I was in high school a friend and I got summer jobs with a local Construction company that specialized in concrete. Our area was a melting pot of families who had immigrated and English was a second language to many adults in the trades.
My buddy and I were pouring concrete at a residential area for a rear patio and our Lead Hand that day was an older Italian guy whose English was fair but not extensive.
While we were placing a post in the concrete the Team Lead yells to us to "push", so we both push and then he starts yelling "no, no, no" and then "push" again. We start pushing again and he yells "no" again and then I say to him "you keep asking us to push but then you yell no, what do you want us to do"?
He thinks for a few seconds and then said, "the other push". We realized that he wanted us to pull, not push so we asked him how to say pull and push in Italian and picked up a few other words and expressions (including how to swear like a sailor) throughout the summer.
I experienced a number of similar things the first few years when I moved to Japan saying the wrong word(s) that made people laugh. _________________ *******************************
