I have received a quote from a shop already of $3,800 for labor/paint/stripes. When you factor in the price I paid for the parts I may come out a little ahead.

Small update:

My door was dropped off last night.
The bumper and nose skin are on their way.

I have gutted the bus from the drivers seat back, and I have removed the top of the dash and as much from that area as I can.

I'm hoping to have the bus in the shop by the end of next week.

Eric-
So are you having them paint the entire interior also? I didn't understand why you pulled the back end stuff. If you're doing complete paint are you going to pull all the windows also? How about all the wiring and electrical in front of the dash. Do you have confidence in the shop that it won't get disturbed? Hope it all goes well! Smile The Classic is getting real close.

I pulled the interior for a couple reasons;
1. I didnt want the body shop to accidentally mess them up
2. I wanted to write the tutorial seen in the other thread
I figured it was as good a time as any to be helpful!

The bus isn't getting an entire repaint, but there are a couple spots inside where the paint had flaked off because of the accident damage, so those need to be touched up as well.

All the wiring on the nose of the bus will have to get removed, then installed again. So I am documenting as much as I can. The day I take it to the shop I hope to have everything disconnected as I can and still be able to drive it safely.

The Classic IS getting close; but I'm mainly going just to camp at Blackstar and see friends. I dont think you will see my bus at the Classic. Well, maybe in the parking lot. Razz

If paint flakes off, it was applied improperly, no matter how it is made to flake off. Prep the surface, prime it, apply the paint, a bond ensues. Just saying.....

I doubt the factory applied paint improperly. The crash impact caused creases in the metal. That is where the paint is flaking.

IF it was factory paint, it was applied improperly. Paint that flakes off is bonded to it's neighboring paint atoms, not the surface it was applied to. I've met lots of people in factories who did not deserve their jobs.

Both my bug and bus have been in minor accidents and in both cases the original factory paint chipped where the metal creased.

And so have I. Paint anything, and bend it sharp enough, the paint comes off. Period.

Maybe everything interior wise in a VW. Go to any junk yard and look at the wrecks. Lots of bent metal there with it's properly applied paint still on it.

What you'll be getting is a Brazilian bay nose skin. I hope whoever puts it on for you has an easier time then I did with mine. I had to stretch the hell out of it and use a ratchet strap to get mine on. I don't know if it was that bent out of shape or what. It was fun.

do yourself a favor and before you weld on your new nose skin, cut out that stupid raised area where the VW emblem goes and weld in a piece of sheet metal in its place & fare it smooth..

I guess I wont have to worry about it for a while because Bus Depot F'd up!
I ordered the panel on 4/14. After they confirmed shipping, the transaction was completed on 4/17. They stated I should receive it Tuesday, 4/22. When it did not arrive, I contacted them, and they began to look into the problem. The next day (today) they email saying the part is out of stock and wont be in until June - Now remember, this is 2 days after it was supposed to be DELIVERED!

So I'm looking for another source for a nose panel. Looks like I won't be making it to the VW Classic afterall.

Why does this not surprise me? If I need something months down the road, I order from BD because their prices are good and they have a ton of stuff. But they can take forever to finally locate the part and ship it.. if they really do have it. If I need it this week, I go to one of the many other suppliers who seem to be able to take your order and ship by the next day without paying an extra $40-$50 dollars for Red/Blue/Green or whatever service. They also seem to know immediately whether they have something in stock or not.

Exactly. I ordered from BD because I had emailed previously about the part, and they never mentioned abything about it possibly not being in stock. Plus it was going to be drop-shipped from CA, and would get to me within a few days.

Never again Bus Depot. Evil or Very Mad
