I bought a 77 camper with cabinets that were all chipped up and looked awful. I went nuts trying to figure out the best way to deal with it but one night I took a door off and simply put a hot iron on the laminate and removed it (very easily) and was ASTOUNDED at how beautiful the underlying wood is. I've got 90% of the laminate removed and on what I have removed, I've already stained and varnished and it all came out gorgeous!!!!

Why on earth did VW even consider covering up the wood (all hard-wood laminates) in lieu of finishing it with stain and some sort of plastic coating (poly, varnish, shellac, etc)?????

I'll post pictures once I have the thing back together.

Matt

I'm sure EZ GRUV will chime in here soon.

He did the same thing

Here are just a few quick pictures I pulled from his gallery to get the idea

1.) Covered it for durability and to make it feel homey and or cozy.
2.) Dark wood / brown was I guess the style back then hence why many later bays and early Vanagons had brown interiors.
3.) So you would find the true beauty of the wood many years later when the laminate would peel away.

I actually do like the wood underneath. It makes the interior look more modern.

I did it years ago, I love it! It is so much brighter in the bus.

ezgruv- what type of finish did you use to protect the caninet surface? Would I be correct to assume that you applied a clear coat laquer? I will be taking whats left of my laminate off soon and that looks nice!

wow that gorgeous. one of the first cosmetic things i did was reach up and pull the vynal down off the roof over the rear seat, the wood under there is just as nice. stupid trendy finishes.

wow, that is soooo much better (I have a self diagnosed authenticity disorder). It almost makes me wish my bus was a westy so I could remove that plastic.

I can't tell from the pictures - what kind of wood does it appear to be underneath?

this is from ages ago, you can hardly see it, but the hanging vinyl should prove its gone.
wrong pic Rolling Eyes
I guess I never thought ot point a camera at it. another fun way to bring wood back into your bus, is flipping the panels that run at the corner where the ceiling meets the walls. only 1 or 2 are fully symmetrical, the rest may need mods to work, but once on vacation I got bored, pulled up the trim, undid 4 screws, and flipped the whole thing over. looks alright, could use some cleaning and finish, but it was a step in the right direction
