|
|
I have noticed that this is a topic that comes up now and then, so I made a tutorial since I had a carburettor that needed this fix and a spare pump tube (courtesy of keifernet).
First, a picture of what one looks like
The left one is the brand new part, the left one is the OG part for this carburettor, which I found wrapped around the stem of cylinder #1's intake valve when I tore down the engine.
Now, this is how your carburettor will look like if your tube is missing, note the big gaping hole in the top right corner of the carburettor bore.
Now, to replace this tube, you need to remove the carburettors top cover, held on by 5 big flathead screws. You'll also need to remove the bracket for the return spring, otherwise you'll have the cover dangling about from the same spring.
This is how the carburettor looks like without the top cover and gasket.
Crack out some thread locker, I didn't have any Loctite handy so I used this CRC stuff instead, same thing.
Smear on a very thin film of thread locker on the sides of the tube and jam it into the hole. Make sure to orient it so that it doesn't interfere with the choke butterfly. Dry-fit it a couple of times if you have to.
Here you can see how it looks installed, sorry for the blurry picture, I'm using a new macro lens that I'm not completely used to yet.
Hope this helps someone, quite easy fix that anyone can do, most work is in locating that tube. Also take this opportunity to re-gasket your carburettor if you haven't done it already!
Cheers,

IMO your 'aim' is alittle off. The 'squirt' should be pointed at the spot where the butterfly plate and the 'barrel' meet. Actually alittle more towards the butterfly plate, but not much. In your photo it appears the 'squirt' will hit the 'barrel' and 'spray' instead of shooting down the throat. If you notice the jet has a flat spot on the part that goes into the hole that you loc-tight. The flat spot will be straight with the 'curve' of the barrel when 'aimed' right. |

The plastic "horse shoe" is installed incorrectly. Need to go the other direction.
And while much is written about aiming the stream of fuel to the "edge of the throttle plate" from the accel shooter tube it's actually meant to be pointed straight down the throat of the carb and just miss the big nozzle that's cast in the carb body. I have tested extensively and you get better fuel atomization on these Solex carbs if it's set dead center. |

I was a tad afraid that it would hit the choke butterfly, apparently I didn't dry-fit it enough (follow your own advice and all)
I didn't actually know about that horseshoe thingy, just fitted it as the old one. What's the actual function of that part? I'm not too familiar with Solexs to be honest, I'm more of a Weber kinda guy... _________________

The horseshoe holds the float down. It's curved to avoid the needle valve that sits directly above it. Also, when oriented correctly (pointing toward the outer edge) it'll match the shape of the gasket. _________________ Mike
