Anyone know a way to restore the sun visors?

My Visors are a little sad looking. They swing, and prop up correctly, but the vinyl is baggy and bloated.

I haven't found anything on the forums or anywhere else. Most people say just replace them, but I'm sure there must be a way.

The only way I could see is cut open a seam, apply contact cement and pulling it shut tight and a little heat to reclose the seam again... but the heat source would have to be something not too hot that could melt it back together like heated Sheet metal pliers or something.

Has anyone tried anything else that worked or looks good?

There cheap enough just replace them; after they get old the loosens up and I don't think even contact cement would make them look nice. And if you add thin foam then there to thick.

Other than having an upolstery shop custom make you a new pair, there is no cure for your issue with the bagged out visors.

But two nice used ones,or cut your's apart, try and pull them tight, and glue tham up.

You'll never be happy with the end result, unless you have some sort of vinyl welder in stock.

I got tired of looking at mine, they're at SewFine right now, getting recovered. They were 'baggy' as you described. The other thing I noticed when taking them down was the plastic 'hardware' is bio-degrading. Replacement hardware would be a good aftermarket product.

A friend of mine sewed up very nice visor repair. I don't know what he used as interior padding but it shows that it can be done without using any vinyl welding/gluing.

That repair / new visors look real nice Alistair.

From a vinyl surge/ binding welder he now has moved up into an Industrial sewing machine.

His Montgomery Ward, Sears, Speigal's, Gambles, Gimbles, or Western Tire home style sewing machine unit won't quite get through the binding, material on the visor & the cardboard backer real good.

Might bend some needles, and cause machine to do some stalling in the process.
I don't think that all would fit between the foot & the feed.
Good idea though.

You could also try the loose steering wheel grip trick. Take a syringe filled with glue and inject it in the loose/baggy parts of the sun visor...

I have reinflated saggy visors for other vintage cars.

Using 2 pieces of wood with spacers I make a frame spaced the thickness of the visor.

With the visor in the wooden frame I inject expanding foam.

They are nice, and Terry is right in that it does take some skill to pull off. When Steve gets his van all together it is going to have of the nicest interiors around. The visors are only just the tip of the iceberg.

I can see someone hand stitching leather on the visors. Don't laugh, some vanagon owners put more work into other parts of the van.
cheers

Not to hijack this thread, but has anyone come up with a sano way to keep the visors in place in rough terrain? Tightening the set screw is pretty imprecise---too tight, and you can't use the visor, too loose and in falls down. I've tried Velcro, but it doesn't like to stick the headliner of the Syncro Westy. I'm thinking of some sort of little swivel bracket screwed into the headliner that you could turn to hold the visor in place. Somebody must have had a good idea for this.

They have a how to there. It would work for you by stiffening up the visor's motion I'd think

This thread talks about recovering the sun visors but on mine the vinyl is fine - it is the inside that has disintegrated and they are like an envelope full of dust.

Is there a TK Hall of fame where we can save masterpieces of non-sequitors like this? Would the mods object to a TK/dylan HOF thread? TK’s flat-earth denial of the Mullendore port would be a nice start. Just for fun and learning. Perhaps it could also include the posts that were actually helpful so it would be fair, balanced and land in the no-spin zone. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I installed these ones from Van Cafe a few months ago to replace the bags of disintegrated foam that mine had become: https://www.vancafe.com/251898550A-p/251898550a.htm

They are Classic Line made by JP Group but the driver one has started to fall down already.
