I've worked in Formula 1 Aerodynamics for several years, and this book is indeed the bible of all race cars aedodynamicist. Enjoy

PS: photos would be good, but it would be better to use a high resolution video instead because it will show how the tuft is moving in areas of turbulence. Video players and editors will allow you to step frame by frame to get a clear picture of how each tuft is behaving, rather than a static photo showing it just sticking out. The tuft could be flapping up and down, side to side, or spinning clockwise. You can also grab video frames and save them for reference. I have several video tools and can help with the analysis if you want. Also have a grasp of aerodynamics from my racing days.

This is going to be fun. I know there at least a few other Front Rangers lurking here, so c'mon out when we get it together. All I really need to get my Ghia ready is to get and install new window regulators. The gears are worn and the windows don't go all of the way up, which would alter the aerodynamics, even if only slightly. _________________ 1964 Karmann Ghia Coupe

In order to keep up the momentum, here's what I just finished in preparation for diagramming the results of our little experiment.
I took a scan of the body panel repair page of the Bentley Manual and took the pen tool to it in Illustrator. Ready for some red and blue arrows! _________________ Jason Hopper

Alright, you have the Lowlight schematic ready, now you need to get yours to CO. We need to find someone around here with a Fat Chick to make it all complete. I had a friend tell me that someone around here is rocking a red Ghia coupe, but they weren't able to discern the year. On May 17th there is going to be a cruise night in Longmont where the local hotrod club got Longmont to lift the ban on cruising Main St for the night. I'll be on the lookout for it there. _________________ 1964 Karmann Ghia Coupe

I used to see a white 70/71 up in Ned if you know anyone out that way... _________________ Jason Hopper

Awesome and timely work! Here's some tinkering with a wind tunnel simulator for the iPad. I was trying to figure out how to get decent images of the Ghia body into the program! Here you go:
It seems that the low light is very slippery by default.. _________________ Introducing the Basilari 306R.. A low light Ghia, performance chassis and 300HP boxer six.

Rock 'n roll! I started another thread with a poll for tshirts of the above design just in case anyone is interested. I think it looks pretty baddass, and figured why not. If there's enough interest to cover my expenses I'll throw it out there!
What software is that? FJC found some PC-only stuff and posted some screen shots on STF, but I haven't looked too hard to find any other versions. I don't quite understand what is being shown there, but given the 2D nature of the beast, it might not be all that useful beyond a vague baseline. _________________ Jason Hopper

yeah i saw FJC's stuff and was going to spin up a vm to run it but my laptop doesn't have any Windows images.
The software above is called "Wind Tunnel Pro HD". It works in terms of showing you something, but it's really crude in terms of what you can do. It supports .png file imports but you have to be attentive to the color palette, orientation and image size. It's providing my ghia fix at the moment though and I think I've modeled a brilliant solution to the rear radiator mounting. _________________ Introducing the Basilari 306R.. oh.. and yes, the images above don't really help because they aren't moving. It looks really impressive in the program and you can hand draw on things like spoilers, etc. My flow works like this: 1. hand draw ideas. 2. if they have merit, work on more detail in PhotoShop. 3. Export to png, run in program. 4. Repeat.
like said earlier, it's a fix for ghia withdrawal at the moment. _________________ Introducing the Basilari 306R.. A low light Ghia, performance chassis and 300HP boxer six.

I wonder how Phil Knox's Aero Ghia nose would fair in wind tunnel testing

It has some good features, like the openings below the headlight to handle the airflow forced down by the light itself. Making the body wider in front of the wheels and tucking the rear fenderwell edges in is a huge help, but those vertical bars on either side of the license plate are hurting.

60s airflow schematic at the ready. 72-74 coming. Not sure if 70/71 is appreciably different aerodynamically from the 72-74 model. Anything that comes off the bumpers will be identical to the 60s models, and the rest should be identical to the 72-74 models.

Thanks! Illustrator CS4 (one of these days I'll have to upgrade...).
Last one! 70s.
