Not too much done this weekend, just got done doing a sprint triathalon today... 
Spent a few more hours cleaning up the front beam, installed new grease zerks, primed and painted. I'm looking for someone now to press the new king pin bushings so I can install the drop axles and finish up the front axle with new brakes.

wow you really have that thing stripped and clean  nice. My workspace looks like a damn cave compared to you guys' brightly lit CLEAN garages. Beggars cant be choosers i guess lol
I did mine a couple nights ago
Oh and I HAD to throw in this beautiful deck lid pain. I'm tempted to clear this thing and rock it.

A little work done this weekend. All four torsion arms were media blasted, painted and reinstalled with new grease seals.
Interesting markings:

Spent some time with the pedal assembly in the blasting cabinet, getting ready to paint and install new pedal covers:

I'm still trying to find someone in Houston who can press in my new king pin bushings into my new drop spindles. Once I get that done, will start putting the rest of the suspension and new brakes together. Also need to find someone to turn my OG drums.

Cjm005: Go to places that handle truck suspensions. That is how igot mine done... the shaft for the dropped spindles was very small and thin compared to those off a truck, but the shop should get the job done reaming the pins in!

Not much done over the last few weeks, life has been getting in the way. I have the 2.5" drop spindles mounted with new king pin and link pin bushings:
I did get a nice box of parts from WW today to start putting the front brakes back together. All new master cylinder, brake hoses, brake hardware kit, wheel cylinders, pads:
I found these sweet vintage valve covers at VW swap meet this weekend. The seller said who they were made by (I forgot now) but I think they are going to look sweet all black with the fins polished aluminum:
Next up is to finish the front brakes, get the master cylinder and brake lines plumbed, finish the front suspension and get the new wheels mounted with tires.
I'm torn between getting the stock smoothies restored with white wall tires, or buying a set of EMPI wheels like these:

I got some work done today, not much - I ended up running into some problems. I did get the '67 style master cylinder mounted with new sleeves and bolts. I tried to mount the front backing plates, but 1 is missing the clips that hold the adjuster one, the 2nd is bent where the wheel cylinder bolts to. I would like to keep these, but I might have to look for a replacement.
My friend is in charge of cleaning up the valve covers - so far he has done a good job at getting the paint off and start polishing them.

This project is going sloooooow.........  I'm missing all of this beautiful fall weather in Texas for driving....
I tried to mount the WW shocks this morning - they won't fit over the lower sleeves on the torsion bars. Next up is getting the newly painted sway bar reinstalled with new hardware.
I really want to get this front axle buttoned up with new wheels / tires so I can move to the back and get this thing rolling.

I was telling myself about missing on the beautyfull weather too when I went to a car show this past friday in Pearland and saw a few bugs. Mine is far from being drivable, so I will set my goal for Fall of 2014.
BTW, you mentioned: "Went with a friend to a local (Houston) VW graveyard and picked up a few missing parts." Where would that graveyard be?
I would love to see the finished EELCO valve covers. I have a set on my engine too.

VW Wizard.... that's actually the name.. 281-689-0061... he has a pretty small outfit, but has some pretty good parts. He's up in Porter, TX.

Some work done this weekend. Got the sway bar mounted again with new hardware, installed the shocks (turned out to be the old sleeves stuck on the studs - thanks Samba!) and some of the brake lines mounted. I have not finished the steering box yet - it is just mounted for initial reference.

A little bit more done this week - hoping to get a good push done over the next few weeks. Here is how she sits as of today:
Dual reservoir mounted and steering box cleaned up, re-greased and mounted:
Next up... going to finish repair to the backing plates, install the front brakes, new tie rods, steering dampener. Afterwards, I'll need to save up for the front wheels and tires.

While scouring local CL ads, I came across this ad for a 1300 VW motor in Houston. The pictures looked super clean - and seller said it still had the original generator, relay, etc. still attached. Went and picked it up this evening - paid the huge sum of $80.00 for this really clean motor. Looking at the case, it's actually a 65/66 1200 40 HP - seems like the symbol at the beginning and X at the end means it was actually a VW warranty motor?
But the VW tag on the engine seems to indicate the motor is actually a 65/66 1500 from a Type 2? Something is goofy?
