not fingers but a good friend lost his leg in a bike wreck(motorcycle).he left work and was going to meet his wife at church and got hit by a nissan murano.i had introduced them and they were married one month to the day.i was at the hospital when he came to after surgery and was told(tried to leave the room but wasn't allowed)the doctor asked if he knew what kind of surgery he had-he looked him in the face and said"not exactly but i ain't walking out on my own two feet til you get me a new one.

On my left foot, the toe next to my pinky was broken years ago. I never went to the doctor so it healed crooked. If some steps on it or I stub it, it hurts really bad. While I was at the doctor last month, I asked him about it. He said there was nothing they could do. The only option would be to amputate it. He didn't recommend doing that.

How'd that happen? table saw?

Matched set of automotive vee belts. But this isn't about me. I want to hear from the others.

torn off...bet that was pleasant!

No worse than, say, having a post deleted. But what REALLY sucked is that on the half- hour ambulance ride, they refused to give me any pain meds! I have abnormally low blood pressure. They took my BP and it was like 95 over 70 or some shit and they were afraid I was in shock. Well, heck yeah! Five minutes ago I had fingers, now part of my hand looks like a damn skeleton. I think that's pretty shocking.

The actual event wasn't as traumatic or discouraging as the surgery and year of getting the hang of working again without what used to be there. Seriously.

It sounds like a horrible experience.
Do people ever laugh at your disability??

Not if they're within reach.

But do they ever call you "Gimp" and then pretend to be your friends having fun?

They can pretend all they want. Homey didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday. just his digits did.

I guess loosing 2 digits on the hand is better than loosing 1 digit in the pants.

Kinda, well for a while.

I hacked through the little finger of my right hand with a fillet knife when I was a toddler between the send/third joint. The reattached it but not the tendon,so it only bends from the second joint.

I'm glad, I'd feel pretty freakish/mutant with parts missing.

I almost lost my left hand about 2 years ago. I brought a compound miter saw down on my arm just above the wrist. Never felt a thing. I didn't even know I did it, but for some reason my arm jerked back towards me unexpectedly. When I looked down, I could see both the ulna and and the radius, as well as muscle, etc. The most bizarre part was seeing all of my extensor tendons severed, but the arm-side and the hand-side trying to make things work without being connected. I knew I was in trouble when I was unable to lift any of my fingers, and could barely lift my hand.

After about 5 hours of surgery, and a little therapy, I've got about 85% use of it, with the only reminder being a pinky that sticks up like I'm a pretentious ass sipping tea.

But no digits lost.

Sorry.

There is some pretty amazing technology out there in table saws to help prevent accidents now. The SawStop is one of the coolest I've seen. It senses when the blade is contacted by the wrong type of material and stops it in milliseconds.

the reason i keep my pocket knife sharpened.

i didnt lose any digits, but almost severed the top knuckle of my middle finger on my right hand when i was using a new pocket knife. my old one broke and was a locking blade style folder. the replacement didnt lock out properly. i had just finished sharpening it, and was cutting a new saxophone reed and was notching the end when it suddenly folded on my middle finger. cleaved into the bone a small bit. but the doctor said it was such a clean cut and was already healing back together by the time i saw him. healed just fine with very little side effects. i get the occasional numb spot on the side of the finger, but nothing other than that.

but if i hadnt kept it sharp, it would have been worse.

Right index finger past the first knuckle. Didn't get it out of a hydraulic vise on a machine quick enough. There is a guy at work that calls me "nine and a half". He laughs every time he says it. I feel a certain comfort in allowing him to take pleasure in my fingerless existance. I have a favorite name for him too. Twisted Evil

Accidents do happen, and I understand that. I know various people that are digit-less due to accidents, and I razz them about being a dumbass about getting their flesh caught in the blade (maybe 'douchebag' was too strong for you, sorry), and they all take it as such.
