Ive got a copy of "Volkswagen Bug! The people's car" (second printing October 1986) here and it does state that for both '53 (page 120) & '55 (page 134) & '56 (page 144) that we are talking about single vizors only & that it is an optional extra in '55.
HOWEVER, by the time 1957 comes around the single vizor is standard and the DOUBLE is an optional extra (see below).
Maybe there is an update to this as this book is over 20 years old. And of course, a double isn't correct for either my '54 nor my '56 from any information so far.

Like I said earlier

One other thing, on an oval a passenger side visor was a separate piece that sandwiched between the body and the mirror base. Other than verts ovals only had a single visor from the factory. |
This means a dealer accessory. That means it could be installed by the dealer at an extra charge to the customer. This could have been done at time of purchase or later in the vehicles service.

The vizors look curved too, not rectangular like my repro ones, which are obviously correct for earlier Ovals. |
ALL ovals had visors with right angles for the aluminum frame, but depending on the year the plastic insert had subtle changes in shape. 55 and earlier had a flat bottom, mid 56 had flat bottom with rib, late 56 on (like your repro) had curved bottom with rib. Curved aluminum frames (like your original purchase with passenger side cracked) were factory install on 58 and 59 ONLY.
Here is a pic of an accessory passenger side mount and visor for a 55 and earlier oval. The only difference for a later oval would be the plastic insert, the 90 degree frame would be the same.
Time to sell the mirror with the broken visor to someone with a 58/59 and get the correct mirror for your oval.
You never said if your oval is LHD or RHD.
Edit: More pics of split and oval visors from the gallery

OK, from the collected information so far (RHD btw), I will have a 56 bug with a '57 optional rear view mirror with double late '55 sunvizors.
Since it is a double, its nicer to drive when youve got a passenger to consider.
Might keep an eye out for a single but there are other things that interest me more like getting hold of a batwing horn button for now & maybe some '56 front seats sometime.
Thanks for the detail. Fascinating detail on those old catalogue pages. _________________ Cog: Completely free to drive till I breakdown.

This is the correct mirror for your oval
with this as the add on passenger visor
Both visors should be like the repro you already have depending on your vin #. If you really want to be correct the rivets are specific to right and left side of the car but the repros only come one way and only in the 57 style.
Also a batwing steering wheel is for 55 and earlier ovals (non dished, center spoke). Sometimes the later 56-59 wheel is also called batwing but are different, slight dish and offset spoke.
Are you restoring your oval to stock or trying to make it look older? _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

Cheers derfult, no dont let me get you confused too, check my signature, i have a '54 that needs a batwing button, not the '56. Multitasking with Ovals.....
As
for the 56, well for now the vizor/RVM is near enough.
Thanks
P.S. Rant: how the hell did the original rear view mirror go missing on the car in the first place !!!! Jeez!! _________________ Cog: Completely free to drive till I breakdown.

This is an interesting topic as I'm going through the same thing right now as I'm trying to find out what visor is correct for a May 55 Vert.
I had assumed the square trailing edged visor was Vert only and the slightly rounded trailing edge visor is Saloon only but now I don't think that's the case. In addition I think it's not as clear cut as people make out as I've reached the conclusion it depends on which supplier VW was using at the time.
Question I've got it when were visors started to be fitted with the "lip" in the trailing edge as I thought all Oval's had this and it was Split's with a "flat" trailing edge? |

Hey crazyoval,
Here is a mirror and visor I removed from a 56 oval. Its yours if you want it. PM me your postal address, and I'll send it on Monday.
Cheers
John

F22a: what Derluftwagan has posted up with those catalogue pages just shows how many options there were so I agree, I am not sure how well you can be sure (although I am clear the one I purchased is a '57 and up now thanks to the guys here).
The information I have here is that from May '54 to "late '58" the vizor and r'v' mirror were all the same, double vizors with a flip up mirror when the hood was down. The book is "The 1949 - 1959 VW Beetle. Authenticity Series" by Bob Wilson however it does not show detail on the vizors themselves for each year so I cant help you there.
I'll take a look in another book for you later to see what I can gather.
I still don't get why a rear view mirror would normally go missing from a car (apart from if someone takes a car apart to rebuild and then looses a bit).
Its not like say, steering wheels where some kid might have thrown away the 'boring' big wheel and replaced it with small sporty thing in the 70's
Maybe one guy somewhere lost his, took one from another car that wasn't the correct year, and then like dominos everyone else was getting a replacement for their missing one but cocking up on the correct year.
I've had two '56 Ovals in my time so far and both the sods have incorrect rear view mirrors! If they fitted it wouldn't be so bad but JEEEEZZZ!!! the wrong mirrors are screwed on with new drilled holes!! both of the cars were done this way!! Name and shame I say!!! _________________ Cog: Completely free to drive till I breakdown.

Right, back from the barn. This is the same as what is in my '54. I feel a lucky boy.
Secondly, I took off the old rv mirror from my '56 to see if the '57 & up would fit. The holes match up but it doesnt lay flat against the screw holes so if this is, from the information i have so far, a '57 & up, '57 ovals must be a different shape slightly behind the rear view mirror. Either that or my info is incorrect and it is simply not an oval rvm.
So like derluft said. Time to sell for sure.
The '54's was in lovely condition though _________________ Cog: Completely free to drive till I breakdown.

SO! since this was a showing of pure Bug love I will continue the flow and offer my '57..ish and up double sun vizor / rear view mirror to the first guy who asks for it, for the cost of P&P. One of the vizors is snapped: ------>

I have a really nice '58 Visor. Can I run it on the Oval-era mirror/arm assembly?
Also - the plastic portion is slightly warped, does anyone have any reccomendations to help flatten it? Let it sit under a stack of phone books for awhile? _________________ 1957 Beetle

Try some 0000 steel wool. _________________ It all works on paper.
