I'm guessing this has to do with the deep skylight changeover on the deluxe buses.
From Barndoor.dk... "I have found that the change is between chassis number 20-044995 and 20-049493."
Seems to be Feb '53.
On the deep skylight deluxes, the inner panel has no pressing for the skylights. It's just flat. (Which reminds me I think I mentioned I would take pictures of this for another thread...) so, I figure if that inner panel didn't exist yet, they would have just used shorter sections of roof support rails.
This bus is Nov 14th, 1952. _________________ C-1 |

Really looking forward to seeing this painted. You should maybe think about doing this for a living ken, you're quite good at it! _________________

Thanks Alan. I think I'd be flat out broke if I did this for a living. The reality is, it's a hobby for me that is closely related to my work.

Believe it or not.... Since our last conversation about this, I'm actually thinking about taking that one on for you. Not for the money so much, but as a thank you for making the panels, and helping guys like me to save these old buses. At least that bus will be cheap to ship....

Thanks again guys. Simon, call me anytime. And yes, we should hook up for a few beers or dinner while were in LA. It's always fun to cruise down to Newport beach in an old bus.
Started on the motor this week. I've decided on a vintage speed 36hp, based of a 20- case, 69mm crank and 83mm pistons. I'm a little worried about the power, if it will be enough for the bus, especially on those long road trips. I had Rimco machine down the fins of a 40hp big bore kit to fit under the 36hp tin, and there is not much left for fins. Which is making me worry if there will be any issues with it running hot. I guess I'll know in the spring...
The case, machined by Rimco. Claranced for a stroker crank, opened up for the 83mm cylinders, oil galleries tapped, and spot faced. I alodine coated it. Don't ask me where I got the alodine from...
DPR 69.5 mm crank
NOS main bearings.
And the crank assembled. Empi 5.4 rods, Narrowed to fit the crank and re-bushed pin ends for the big-bore 83mm pistons.

Thanks for the update Ken. I always watch your build threads with interest.
I'm curious about how much horsepower the "36" is going to make with the "upgrades".
I might be able to stop in for a quick visit in a couple of weeks. Time will tell.

Ha! I'm thinking of driving out to the west coast this summer in my TR6. It would be fun to go on Volkswagen Safari and stop in and see all you guys. Unfortunately I won't have room for John's decklid in my trunk...

Lovely work Ken. Sorry you couldn't make the trip down to Australia late last year when we brought Gerson over....hopefully next time!
I'll be over in the US in May/June again so would love to meet up.
Cheers

I am worried.
Rimco turned the barrels down for me, as I had heard they have clearance issues not only between them, but also for the cylinder tins to fit. It seems to me like they took a fair amount off.
In the meantime... Motor building has come to a complete halt while I'm waiting for JE to make a set of custom poisons for me. I had a little bit of poke, out the top of the Cylinder...

| Seems like they took off more than they needed to. Don't the stock barrel's fins surround the head studs? I hope they work ok. Very much looking forward to seeing this thing all finished up. Also looking forward to seeing you start on the 23 window which I just found the thread for this morning. |
