Right around the corner from our apartment. Doesn't look like it's been moved in quite some time and from the looks of it, is very straight. I'm guessing 68 or 69 deluxe.

Yep.
In case anyone is wondering, the square reflector on the lower part of the front door, combined with wide five wheels, makes it a 70. Round reflectors were a 68-69 thing, and small five lug pattern started in 71.
FWIW, the wood splitter sitting next to it is probably more valuable, but the bus does look pretty straight from that distance. It's time you stop by and get a closer look, and talk with the owner. Maybe it can be had for an hour of splitting wood. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

OK. I've got a little story to tell. About five years ago, I found out about a splitty double cab near me that had been in a bad wreck many years ago, and it was sitting behind a barn. I got the contact info, and made arrangements to go check it out. This is what I found.
Along with getting the truck, I gained anew friend in John, the owner. John also drives a 71 bus, and had a 69 bus on the property, too. It had been his driver until he slid into the ditch back in 2001, and laid the bus gently on it's side. I was interested in that bus at the time, but I could not convince him to sell it. My wife and I nearly bought his property a few years later, but that didn't pan out, and his sister bought it and allowed him to stay there as long as he wanted.
A couple of weeks ago, I was out on a cruise and went by John's place, as it is along a nice country road, and I had not seen him since fall. I like to stop by and chat occasionally, as he is getting older and seems to enjoy the company. He has some fun stories to tell about his life's travels.
As I come upon his driveway, I see a silver Vanagon, but not his Elm Green 71. I think to myself that maybe he got "new" car. I pull in and go up to the house, only to find his sister and Brother-in-law are there, but not John. Turns out, he is in the hospital, but doing OK. They are in town from the Seattle area to keep tabs on hm, and clean up his place a bit. After some conversation, they want me to take the 69 bus away. I offer to help do some much needed maintenance around the property, including installing a gate at the driveway. A couple of days later, we actually drive into the property and catch two guys stealing scrap copper from one of the out buildings. They knew John, knew he was in the hospital, and knew where to get there next fix. The gate went up the next day, with a big ass padlock.
So today, I borrowed my friend's truck, drug out my towbar, air tank, jack, spare tires, etc. and hit the road. Here's how it looked just after getting it hooked up.
We pulled it forward out of it's eleven year resting spot so we could more easily inspect it, and get the right front drum unstuck. The tow home was nice, and uneventful. Only ten miles. Bus is mostly cleaned up now, but the dinner bell rang before I could get "after" photos, and it was too dark by the time I had stuffed my belly. I'll put up some shiny pics tomorrow. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

Found this thru a co-worker. Had a conversation after the last hurricane came thru Maryland. This camper was in his garage and in danger of being crushed by trees that fell during the storm.
Been waiting for about 7 months to bring it home. Had to sell off my last "fun" vehicle before I could commit to another project.
Hershey is a '78 CEII Westy even though it's hard to tell with the Earl Scheib paint job.
It's relatively low rust. Rebuilt engine, but parked for last 5 years indoors in garage. Planning on pulling engine and replacing seals and hoses while I hopefully have someone else take care of cutting out the rust and having it resprayed orange & white.
Hope to do a rolling restoration thru the summer after paint and then do most of the rest over the winter.
Still has most of the original accessories including both OG power cord, tables, stool and the bucket (missing strap & lid though).

It does have the Sapphire radio in the dash and notice the chrome trim. The lack of an engine may be a problem. _________________ 1977 Westy 2.0L FI

There are likely a few other trinkets that can be saved. The rest is obviously toast. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

I had been eyeballing this bus for about four years on a piece of property next to a co-workers house. Finally put in the effort to contact the owner who lives in another state. I bought it for $200 and scooped it up onto my flatbed. I've got it ripped down and just about ready to stab an engine I got from a buddy. Build boomerang plates for it and ordering my avis adjusters and spindles soon. hopefully will have it on the road by the end of this month.

well not today but a couple weekends ago
not as dramatic as many others posted here but it was fun. my son and nephew helped a buddy pulled this 74 Bay from his hangar where it sat for 10-12 years.
we had a good time with the rear drums locked up solid. It took a few tugs with the truck and a couple directions before they let loose enough to get it on the trailer.
couple pics. being sold for parts bus. just loaded ad in classified.
